How can I get rid of weeds?

Is my lawn dead?
It could be, but it's also likely just taking a nap during those soaring temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer, so it's alive but sleeping. Here's how you can check: If you tug on a grass blade and it pulls right out, it's time to plant new sod or grass seed because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply but not often. Warm-season grass needs water every few days in the summer. It should stay green if it's healthy.
Should I grow veggies vertically?

When do I fertilize my veggie plants?

You can even find one that's formulated for whatever you're growing, whether you need a shrub fertilizer, tomato fertilizer, or a garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as directed on the packaging. More is not better here. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the fertilizer won't burn the plants.

When you need a break from gardening in the sun, shelter under a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. Attach awnings and shade sails to the shed or house to create shadowy spots to rest in. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and make a stifling afternoon into a relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

As summer rolls in, your landscaping and garden will weather more heat and sun than earlier in the season. You'll need to consider how to keep things cool with proper tending and irrigation. You might also need ways to beat the heat. We've got advice to make it through the hotter months.
Grow a Healthy Lawn
If you're worried that your lawn has dry and crispy blades of grass, don't worry just yet. It's possible that you've got a cool season grass that goes dormant and turns brown in the blazing summer sun. If that's the case, it'll be an overall shade of brown, but not green with brown patches. See if the roots are alive by tugging on a blade of grass: If it comes right out, the grass is probably dead and will need to be replaced with new grass seed or sod. If it doesn't come right out, it's dormant. That means it's resting but still alive underground. Dormant grass should be watered deeply once or twice a week — if it doesn't rain — but not fertilized.
Warm-season grass stays green in the summer. If you have this kind of lawn, water it deeply once a week. Give it another drink every day or two, depending on your weather. Avoid overwatering, and allow the lawn to dry out after heavy rains before you get out the sprinkler or garden hose again. Water your yard when the top two inches of soil is dry to the touch. You can check with your finger. This might happen quicker than you'd think during drought or extreme hot spells. It's ok to let the grass grow a little taller this time of the year, as cutting your lawn too short isn't healthy for it.
Watch Your Garden Thrive
Water your garden hydrate it between rainstorms and keep the summer flowering going. A general rule when watering flowers and plants is to aim the water at the roots. A drip irrigation system, sprinkler system, or garden hose will do the job. You don't need to water or even mist the blossoms themselves. Many flowers wilt and droop when they get wet, but they'll recover just fine when they dry. Succulents are an exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

Grow Your Own Herbs
For savory flavors to accent your homegrown produce, add herbs. They grow easily in pots, both indoors and outdoors, and are generally low-maintenance. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll endure the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden.
It can be tricky to plant herbs in the ground, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your yard. So keep them in small decorative pots on a sunny porch, window sill, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in regular black dirt. Instead, they grow in a mixture of rock chips, perlite, or sand.

Plant vines near a trellis or arbor so they'll climb it and give you both shade and beauty. Viney plants that are native to your area are a good choice for success and attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. Morning glories, honeysuckle, and clematis are common options for creating a shady and beautiful archway or pathway. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sunshine you receive, as not all of them thrive in full sun.
