Frequently Asked Questions About Gardening

What are good ways to get rid of weeds?

Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down landscape fabric liner or mulch to keep them at bay. Pull weeds from the root in gardens you'll be eating from, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. Be sure to get rid of weeds before they go to seed. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pollinators and pets — and wear a respirator and heavy rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't touch your lungs or skin.

Is my yard dead?

It could be, but it's also likely napping during those soaring temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer, so it's alive but sleeping. You can check though: If you can easily pull out a blade of grass with no resistance, it's time to plant new sod or seed because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply once every week. Warm-season lawns need water every few days in the summer. Those lawns stay green if they're healthy.

What are the benefits of vertical gardening?

As the plants and veggies grow, it's easier to keep your harvest healthy. You can see evidence of wildlife or other pests eating your produce and treat the issue as you see fit. When your fruits and vegetables are ready to pick, you'll see them right away, so you can enjoy them at their freshest. If these same plants grow along the ground, you may miss your first harvest among the shadowy leaves. Supporting the plants as they grow upright means your upkeep will be less overwhelming when you harvest your garden veggies.

How do I keep my flowers healthy?

After you've planted your plants or flowers, make sure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose an organic or a synthetic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for the plants you're growing, whether you need a flower fertilizer, veggie fertilizer, or a general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as directed on the packaging. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the fertilizer won't burn the plants.

How can I keep cool this summer?

When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a house or shed, make your own shade by attaching sun sails and awnings. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's extremely humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

How do I entertain on the patio?

Backyard entertaining is whatever you find enjoyable — it doesn't have to be a cookout. Some focus on the grill or fire pit, while others concentrate on yard games. Many people simply relax outdoors and chat. Whichever path you take for bonding with friends, extend the fun into the evening with proper outdoor lighting and a bug-free summer yard without pesky mosquitos.

As summer rolls in, your landscaping and garden will weather more heat and sun than earlier in the year. You'll want to consider how to keep things cool with irrigation, proper tending, and shade. You might also need ways to beat the heat. Let us help. At your Garden Center in Ashburn, we've got what you need to make the most of summer.

Keep Your Lawn Tidy
As the weeks tick by, the grass or sod you planted will grow taller than what's ideal. You'll need to maintain it so it'll look manicured and fresh again. Keep the lawn in check with a lawn mower and a string trimmer to knock down any tall grass around hardscaping and trees.

Bushes, shrubs, and trees climb toward the sun and lose their shape over time. In the summer, they'll be growing fast, filled with buds and blooms before you know it. Manicure them into a beautiful shape with the best hedge trimmers for your shrubs. It's best to leave major tree maintenance and tree topping to the pros, but you may want to use a pole saw for minor trims and a chainsaw to shape small trees and bushes.

Watch Your Garden Thrive
Much of your garden's upkeep comes down to balancing sunlight and hydration. You'll need both to keep flowers growing and spirits high with summer flowering. A general rule when watering flowers and plants is to aim the water at the roots. A drip irrigation system, sprinkler or sprinkler system, or garden hose will do the job. You don't need to water or even mist the blossoms themselves. Many flowers droop when wet, but they'll recover just fine once they dry off. Succulents are the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

In addition to watering, monitor your plants' nutrient intake. Add fertilizer as recommended. We've even got fertilizers to match the plants you're growing so they'll absorb the proper nutrients.

Grow Your Own Herbs
For fresh flavors to accent your homegrown produce, add herbs. They grow easily in pots, both indoors and outdoors, and are usually low-maintenance. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll endure the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden.

It can be tricky to plant herbs in the ground, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your yard. So keep them in small decorative pots on a sunny window sill, porch, or even as a beautiful hanging garden on a wall. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in regular black dirt. Instead, they grow in a mixture of sand, perlite, or rock chips.

Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are a natural source of shade, and they can change the look of your yard. Whether you plant a few trees as accents, a few more to bear fruit, or a whole mini-forest, keep in mind this is a long-term commitment. Trees live many decades when they're healthy. Before you shop, look into how to plant a tree, whether they're evergreens, deciduous tree saplings, or more mature trees.

Although trees framing a house may look picturesque, you should research the specifics of those trees before you plant them. Consider how deep the taproots go, how far the roots extend outward, and the full-grown size of the trees. Plant your trees far from water pipes, as their strong roots will seek water and curl into piping to get it. A tree with a full canopy of leaves catches wind like a sail, so make sure it's planted a safe distance from your home. If you've planned accordingly, found trees you love, and know the best places to put them, get planting. That way, you can enjoy the leaves rustling in the breeze and dappled shade sooner rather than later.
