What can I do about weeds?
Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down landscape fabric liner or mulch to keep them at bay. Pull weeds from the root in edible flower or vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. Be sure to get rid of weeds before they go to seed. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pollinators and pets — and wear a respirator and heavy-duty rubber gloves to ensure that the chemical doesn't touch your lungs or skin.
Is brown grass dead?
It could be, but it's also likely just taking a break during those soaring temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer, so it's alive but sleeping. You can check though: If you can easily pull out a blade of grass with no resistance, it's time to plant new grass seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply but not often. Warm-season grass needs water every few days in the summer. It should stay green if it's healthy.
What are the benefits of vertical gardening?
As the veggies and plants grow, keeping your harvest healthy is easier. You can see evidence of wildlife or other pests eating your produce and treat the issue as you see fit. When your fruits and vegetables mature and are ready to pick, you'll see them immediately, so you can enjoy them at peak freshness. When do I fertilize my plants?
Once you've planted your flowers or plants, make sure they stay well-fed and hydrated. Choose an organic or a synthetic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a fruit tree fertilizer, shrub fertilizer, or a general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as instructed on the packaging. More is not better here. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the fertilizer won't burn the plants.
Can I lower the humidity in my patio?
When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. Attach awnings and sun sails to the shed or house for shady spots. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and make a stifling afternoon into a relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

As the calendar turns to summer, your garden and landscaping will weather more heat and sun than earlier in the year. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with proper tending, irrigation, and shade. Just like we can get sunburned, grass can get scorched and trees can lose their leaves prematurely. We've got guidance to make it through the hotter months.
Lawn Repair and Patching
Burnt, or scorched, grass has an oddly shaped discoloration that looks yellow. It happens when plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight or a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn. You'll often find it once you move something that's been sitting out in the yard, like a trash can or garden hose. Car windows or mirrors can also scorch grass when the sun angle is right.
Water burnt grass well and wait a week or so. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged by pet urine or otherwise unsalvageable, you'll need to use patch and repair seed to fix it up or replace the grass.
Whether you're patching a lawn or doing upkeep on your current one, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the grass type to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. For example, if your lawn gets full sun, make sure you plant grass that thrives in the sunlight instead of a type that likes shade or dappled sun.
Watch Your Garden Thrive
You'll need to water your garden between rainstorms to keep the summer flowering going. A general rule when watering plants and flowers is to aim the water at the roots. A drip irrigation system, sprinkler or sprinkler system, or garden hose can get the job done. Contrary to popular belief, the blooms themselves don't need to be watered or even misted. Many flowers droop when they get but recover once they dry off. Succulents are, of course, the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

Vertical Vegetable Gardening
If you like to grow your own food, take it vertical and consider growing organically. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a fence or trellis, so plant them next to one. Support the stem itself, as well as the junctions just below where the branches grow off the stem. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the branches or stem.
Fasten the plant to a trellis, pole, or tomato cage with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to attach each plant loosely. Then the branches and leaves can sway in the breeze and the stem has room to grow wider. Strawberries, tomatoes, squash, canteloupe and cucumbers need support as they bear fruit. Squash and melons require hammocks made of string, old nylons, a sling, or other stretchy fabric to support the weighty produce. All of these plants take up less space on the ground this way, which allows you to fit even more plants or have walking room in between.
Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines to climb a trellis or arched arbor to provide both beauty and shade. Vines that are native to your area are a good choice for success and attract bees and other pollinators. Grape vines are a classic choice, but they take time to mature, so you'll enjoy dappled shade but no grapes for a few years. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sunlight you receive, as not all of them thrive in full sun. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers with a delightful fragrance you can enjoy.
