Frequently Asked Questions About Gardening

How can I get rid of weeds?

Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down landscape fabric liner to keep them at bay. Pull weeds from the root in gardens you'll be eating from, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. Be sure to get rid of weeds before the weeds' flowers dry out and and drop their seeds. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pets and pollinators — and wear a respirator and heavy rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't touch your skin or your lungs.

How do I fix grass damaged by pets?

Just rehydrate those roots. The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is simple: Fix the burnt spot with a good drink, then continue to water it regularly. It should perk up within the next week. On the other hand, the news for how to treat grass from dog urine isn't as simple. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replaced in fresh soil with new grass, or patch and repair grass seed.

When's the best time to water plants?

Ideally, water early in the morning. The next best time is in the evening, when the sun is past its peak. Watering during the heat of the day means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: plants, grass, bushes, and veggies. Give all the plants a thorough drink, and don't skip it because it's not the best time. The plants still need hydration regardless of the time on the clock. Depending on your lawn's health, grass type, and climate, you may also want to look into applying a lawn fertilizer.

When do I fertilize my veggie plants?

Once you've planted your plants or flowers, make sure they're well-fed and hydrated. Choose an organic or a synthetic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a flower fertilizer, fertilizer for veggie plants, shrub fertilizer, or a general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as suggested on the packaging. More is not better here. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the fertilizer won't burn the plants.

Do you carry patio misters?

When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a shed or house, make your own shade by attaching awnings and shade sails. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's just too humid. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Go back to swinging in a hammock when that water-cooled air is ready.

How do I make my patio look special for entertaining?

Spending time with friends in gorgeous summertime weather makes the season even more special. But you don't need to do a full backyard makeover or to create your own patio conversation sets from scratch to do it. Even a minor backyard refresh can make a big difference. New outdoor lounge furniture, strings of outdoor lights, or even an outdoor rug can breathe new life into an outdoor space.

As the calendar turns to summer, your garden and landscaping will weather more intense heat and UV rays than earlier in the year. You'll want to consider how to keep things cool with irrigation and proper tending. You might also need ways to beat the heat. Let us help. At your Garden Center in Castleton, we've got what you need to make it through the hotter months with flying colors.

Lawn Repair and Patching
Scorched, or burnt, grass has a distinctively shaped discoloration that isn't green. It happens when a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn or plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight. You'll find it when you move something sitting out in the yard, like a garden hose or sprinkler. Car windows or mirrors can also scorch grass when the sun angle is right.

Water burnt grass well and wait a week. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged by pet urine or otherwise unsalvageable, you'll need to use patch and repair seed to fix it up or replace the grass.

Whether you're patching a lawn or doing upkeep on your current one, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the grass type to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. For example, if your lawn is shaded by buildings and gets partial shade or dappled sun, make sure you plant sod that prefers shade.

Watch Your Garden Thrive
Water your garden hydrate it between rainstorms and keep the summer flowering going. A general rule when watering flowers and plants is to aim the water at the roots. A drip irrigation system, sprinkler or sprinkler system, or garden hose can get the job done. The blooms themselves don't need to be watered or even misted. Many flowers droop when they get but recover once they dry off. Succulents are, of course, the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

In addition to watering, monitor the nutrients your plants are getting. Apply fertilizer as recommended. We've even got fertilizers to match the plants you're growing so they'll get the right nutrients.

Grow Your Own Herbs
For savory flavors to accent your homegrown produce, add herbs. They're generally low-maintenance. It's easy to learn how to grow herbs indoors, but you can raise herbs outdoors, too. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll endure the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden.

Planting herbs in the ground can be tricky, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your yard. So grow them in small decorative pots on a sunny window sill, porch, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of sand, rock chips, or perlite.

Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are the ultimate natural source of shade, They can change the look of your yard. Whether you plant a few trees or a forest, remember this is a long-term commitment. Trees live many decades when they're healthy. Before you shop, plan so you know how to plant a tree, whether they're deciduous trees, evergreen saplings, or more mature trees.

Although trees framing a house may look picturesque, you should research the specifics of those trees before you plant them. Consider how deep the taproots go, how far the roots extend outward, and the full-grown size of the trees. Trees will always find the easiest source of water, so be sure to plant them away from the water lines so they won't be damaged by moisture-seeking roots. A tree with a full canopy of leaves catches wind like a sail, so make sure it's planted a safe distance from your home. If you've planned accordingly, found trees you love, and know the perfect places to put them, get planting. That way, you can enjoy natural shade and the soothing sound of leaves rustling in the breeze sooner rather than later.
