How can I get rid of weeds?
Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down landscape fabric liner to keep them at bay. Be sure to get rid of weeds before the weeds' flowers dry out and and drop their seeds. Pull weeds from the root in gardens you'll be eating from, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pets and pollinators — and wear a respirator mask and heavy-duty rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't touch your lungs or skin.
Is brown grass dead?
It could be, but it's also likely napping during those soaring temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer, so it's alive but sleeping. You can check though: If you tug on a grass blade and it pulls right out, it's time to plant new seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply but not often. Warm-season grass needs water every few days in the summer. It should stay green if it's healthy.
What are the benefits of vertical gardening?
As the veggies and plants grow, the harvest will be easier to keep healthy. You can see evidence of wildlife or other pests eating your produce and treat the issue as you see fit. When your fruits and vegetables mature and are ready to pick, you'll see them right away, so you can enjoy them at their freshest. When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. Add awnings and shade sails to the shed or house for shade. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and make a stifling afternoon into a relaxing day. Grow a Healthy Lawn
If you're worried that your lawn has brown and dry blades of grass, don't panic just yet. It's possible that you've got a cool season grass that basically goes to sleep and turns brown in the heat of the summer. If that's the case, it'll be brown, but not in patches. See if the roots are alive by tugging on a blade of grass: If it comes right out, the grass is probably dead and will need to be replaced with new grass seed or sod. If it doesn't pull right out, it's dormant. That means it's growing and resting underground. Dormant grass should be watered deeply once or twice a week but not fertilized.
For warm-season grass that stays green in the summer, water a bit every few days and deeply once a week. The amount of water should add up to about an inch, more or less, each week. Make sure not to overwater, and allow the lawn to dry out after heavy rains before you get out the hose or sprinkler again. Water your yard when the top two inches of soil is dry to the touch. You can check with your finger. This might happen quicker than you'd think during extreme hot spells. It's ok to let the grass grow taller this time of the year, as cutting it too short isn't healthy for this kind of lawn.
Watch Your Garden Thrive
Summertime garden upkeep comes down to balancing water and sunlight. You'll need both to keep trees growing and spirits high with summer flowering. A general rule when watering flowers is to aim the water at the roots. A garden hose, drip irrigation system, or sprinkler will do the job. You don't need to water or even mist the blossoms themselves. Many flowers wilt when they get but recover once they dry. Succulents are an exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.
In addition to watering them regularly, keep an eye on your plants' nutrient intake. Add fertilizer as recommended. We've even got fertilizers to match the plants you're growing so they'll enjoy a balanced diet with the proper nutrients.
Vertical Edible Gardening
Grow produce vertically for a smart use of space. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a fence or trellis, so plant them next to one. The key to success is supporting the stem, fruit, and branches. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the branches or stem.
Fasten your plant to a trellis, pole, or tomato cage with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to tie each plant loosely. Then the stem has room to grow wider and the branches and leaves can sway in the breeze. Strawberries, tomatoes, squash, canteloupe and cucumbers need support as they bear fruit. Squash and melons require hammocks made of string, old nylons, a sling, or other stretchy fabric to support the weighty produce. These plants take up less space on the ground when grown vertically, which allows you to fit even more plants or have walking room in between.
Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near a trellis or arched arbor so they'll climb it and give you both beauty and shade. Viney plants that are native to your area are a good choice for success and attract pollinators. Grape vines are a classic choice, but they take time to mature, so you'll enjoy dappled shade but no grapes for a few years. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sunlight you receive, as some like full sun and others don't. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers, so you can enjoy a delightful fragrance in the cool shade.
