How do I treat weeds in my edible garden?
Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down landscape fabric liner to keep them at bay. Pull weeds from the root in edible gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. Be sure to get them before they go to seed. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pets and pollinators — and wear a respirator and heavy-duty rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't touch your lungs or skin.
Is my grass dead?
It could be, but it's also likely napping during those soaring temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer. It isn't usually dead — just crispy and brown. You can check though: If you can easily pull out a blade of grass with no resistance, it's time to plant new sod or grass seed because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply but not often. Warm-season grass needs water every few days in the summer. It should stay green if it's healthy.
When should I water my plants?
Ideally, water early in the morning. The next best time is in the evening, when the sun is past its peak. Watering during the heat of the day means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: grass, veggies, bushes, and plants. Whenever you water, give all the plants a thorough drink. The plants still need hydration regardless of the time on the clock. Depending on your grass type, climate, and lawn health, you may also want to look into applying a liquid lawn fertilizer.
When do I fertilize my plants?
Once you've planted your plants or flowers, ensure they're hydrated and well-fed. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for whatever you're growing, whether you need a fruit tree fertilizer, shrub fertilizer, or a general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as instructed on the packaging. More is not better here. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the fertilizer won't burn the plants.
How can I cool off my patio?
When you need a break from gardening in the sun, shelter under a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. Attach awnings and sun sails to the shed or house for shade. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's too humid. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and make a stifling afternoon into a relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

As summer rolls in, your landscaping and garden will weather more heat and sun than earlier in the year. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool. Just like we can get sunburned, grass can get scorched and trees can lose their leaves prematurely. We've got advice to make it through the hotter months.
Grow a Healthy Lawn
If you're worried that your lawn has brown and dry blades of grass, don't worry. It's possible that you've got a cool season grass that basically goes to sleep and turns brown in the blazing summer sun. If that's the case, it'll be brown, but not in patches. See if the roots are alive by tugging on a blade of grass: If it comes right out, the grass is probably dead and you'll need to replace it with grass seed or sod. If the blade of grass doesn't come right out, it's dormant. That means it's growing and resting beneath the surface. Dormant grass should be watered deeply once or twice a week but not fertilized.
Warm-season grass stays green in the summer. If you have this kind of lawn, water it deeply once a week. Give it another drink every day or two, depending on your weather. Make sure not to overwater, and let the lawn dry out after heavy rains before you get out the sprinkler or hose again. If it's especially hot out, water when the top two inches of soil is dry to the touch. It's ok to let the grass grow a little taller this time of the year, as cutting your lawn too short isn't healthy for it.
Watch Your Garden Thrive
Water your garden hydrate it between rainstorms and keep the summer flowering going. A general rule when watering flowers and plants is to aim the water at the roots. A sprinkler or sprinkler system, garden hose, or drip irrigation system will do the job. You don't need to water or even mist the blooms themselves. Many flowers wilt and droop when but recover when they dry. Succulents are the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

Grow Your Own Herbs
For fresh flavors to accent your homegrown produce, add herbs. It's easy to learn how to grow herbs indoors, but you can raise herbs outdoors, too. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll endure the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden.
Planting herbs in the ground can be tricky, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your yard. So keep them in small decorative pots on a sunny window sill, porch, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in soil. Instead, they grow in a mix of rock chips, perlite, or sand.
Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines to climb a trellis or arbor to provide both beauty and shade. Go with vine plants that are native to your area to attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. Jasmine, ivy, and wisteria are common options for creating a shady and beautiful archway or pathway. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sunlight you receive, as some like full sun and others don't. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers, so you can enjoy a delightful fragrance in the cool shade.
