Frequently Asked Questions About Gardening

How do I treat weeds in my lawn?

Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down landscape fabric liner to keep them at bay. Be sure to get rid of weeds before they go to seed. Pull weeds from the root in edible flower or vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pollinators and pets — and wear a respirator mask and heavy rubber gloves to ensure that the chemical doesn't touch your skin or your lungs.

How do I fix grass damaged by pets?

The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is easy: Fix the burnt spot with a good drink. Simply rehydrate those roots. It should perk up within the next week. The method for how to treat grass from dog urine isn't as simple. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replanted in fresh soil with new grass, or patch and repair grass seed.

When's the best time to water my lawn?

If you can water during the early morning or in the evening, that's ideal. Watering during the heat of the day means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: grass, trees, vegetables, and plants. Whenever you water, give all the plants a thorough drink. The plants still need hydration regardless of the time. Depending on your climate, grass type, and lawn health, you may also want to look into applying an organic lawn fertilizer.

How do I keep my vegetable plants healthy?

Once you've planted your flowers or plants, ensure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose an organic or a synthetic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, shrub fertilizer, or a general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as instructed on the packaging. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the fertilizer won't burn the plants.

How can I create shade?

When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a house or shed, create shade by attaching awnings and sun sails. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's extremely humid. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and make a stifling afternoon into a relaxing day. Go back to swinging in a hammock when that water-cooled air is ready.

What do I need for backyard entertaining?

Backyard entertaining is whatever you'd like it to be — it doesn't have to be a gardening party. If you're focused on firing up the grill, make sure you know how to clean a grill afterward. Many people simply relax outdoors and chat all day or maybe cook a meal in an outdoor kitchen instead. However you bond with friends, you can extend the fun into the evening with proper outdoor lighting. For best results, learn how to rid your yard of pesky mosquitos, too.

As the calendar turns to summer, your landscaping and garden will weather more sun and heat than earlier in the year. You'll want to consider how to keep things cool with irrigation and proper tending. You might also need ways to beat the heat. We've got advice to make it through the hotter months with flying colors.

Lawn Repair and Patching
Scorched, or burnt, grass has an oddly shaped discolored patch that isn't green. It happens when plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight or a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn. You'll discover it when you disturb something that's been sitting out in the yard, like a trash can or garden hose. Car windows or mirrors can also scorch grass when the sun angle is just right.

Water burnt grass well and wait a week. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged by pet urine or otherwise unsalvageable, you'll need to replace the grass or use patch and repair seed to fix it up.

Whether you're doing upkeep on your current lawn or patching the bald spots, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the kind of grass to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. For example, if your lawn is shaded by trees and gets dappled sun or partial shade, make sure you plant sod that prefers shade.

Watch Your Garden Thrive
Much of your garden's upkeep comes down to balancing water and sunlight. You'll need both to keep your spirits high and your trees growing with summer flowering. A general rule when watering plants is to aim the water at the roots. A garden hose, drip irrigation system, or sprinkler can get the job done. You don't need to water or even mist the blossoms themselves. Many flowers droop and wilt when but recover once they dry off. Succulents are the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

In addition to watering, keep an eye on your plants' nutrient intake. Add fertilizer as recommended. We've even got fertilizers to match the plants you're growing so they'll absorb the correct nutrients.

Grow Your Own Herbs
For savory flavors to accent your homegrown produce, try herb gardening. They're generally low-maintenance and grow easily in pots, both indoors and outdoors. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll endure the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden.

It can be tricky to plant herbs in the ground, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your yard. So grow them in small decorative pots on a sunny porch, window sill, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in soil. Instead, they grow in a mix of sand, perlite, or rock chips.

Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are a natural source of shade, and they can change the look of your yard. Whether you plant a few trees or a small forest, remember this is a long-term commitment. Trees live many decades when they're healthy. Before you shop, look into how to plant a tree, whether they're deciduous trees, evergreen saplings, or more mature trees.

A house framed by beautiful trees can seem picture-perfect, but research the specific trees you want before planting them. Think about how far the roots extend outward, the full-grown size of the trees, and how deep the taproots go. Plant your trees far from underground plumbing, as their strong roots will seek water and wend into piping to get it. As majestic as trees are, it's essential to also consider how and where they'd fall if a significant storm or disease weakened them. If you've planned accordingly, found trees you love, and know the ideal places to put them, get planting. That way, you can enjoy natural shade and the soothing sound of leaves rustling in the breeze sooner rather than later.
