What are good ways to get rid of weeds?
Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch or a landscape fabric liner to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before they go to seed. Pull weeds from the root in edible flower or vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear a respirator and heavy rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't touch your skin or your lungs.
Is brown grass dead?
It could be, but it's also likely just taking a break during those soaring summer temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer, so it's alive but sleeping. You can check to verify though: If you tug on a grass blade and it pulls right out, it's time to plant new seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply once every week. Warm-season grass needs water every few days in the summer. It should stay green if it's healthy.
When's the best time to water grass?
Ideally, water early in the morning. The next best time is in the evening, when the sun is past its peak. A noon or mid-day watering will evaporate quickly, so come back with an evening watering. This applies to whatever you're growing: grass, trees, veggies, and plants. Give all the plants a thorough drink. The plants still need hydration regardless of the time. Depending on your climate, grass type, and lawn health, you may also want to look into applying a lawn fertilizer.
When do I fertilize my flowers?
After you've planted your plants or flowers, ensure they're well-fed and hydrated. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a flower fertilizer, veggie fertilizer, tomato fertilizer, or a general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as instructed on the packaging. More is not better here. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.

When you need a break from gardening in the sun, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. Add awnings and shade sails to the house or shed for shady spots. As the calendar turns to summer, your garden and landscaping will weather more heat and sun than earlier in the season. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with irrigation, proper tending, and shade. You might also need ways to beat the heat. We've got advice to help your lawn, your garden, and your family make it through the hotter months with flying colors.
Lawn Repair and Patching
Scorched, or burnt, grass has an oddly shaped discolored spot that looks yellow. It happens when a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn or metal or plastic sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight. You'll discover it once you move something sitting out in the yard, like a garden hose or trash can. Car windows or mirrors can also scorch grass when the sun angle is right.
Water burnt grass well and wait a week. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged by pet urine or otherwise unsalvageable, you'll need to use patch and repair seed to fix it up or replace the grass.
Whether you're doing upkeep on your current lawn or patching the bald spots, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the kind of grass to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. For example, if buildings or trees shade your lawn so it gets dappled sun or partial shade, make sure you plant grass that's not meant for full sun.
Watch Your Garden Thrive
You'll need to water your garden between rainstorms to keep the summer flowering going. A general rule when watering flowers is to aim the water at the roots. A drip irrigation system, sprinkler or sprinkler system, or garden hose can get the job done. Contrary to popular belief, the blooms themselves don't need to be watered or even misted. Many flowers wilt when wet, but they'll recover just fine once they dry off. Succulents are, of course, the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a fence or trellis, so plant them next to one and watch them climb. The key to success is supporting the fruit, branches, and stem. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the branches or stem.
Fasten your plant to a tomato cage or pole with twine, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to tie each plant loosely. Then the leaves and branches can sway in the breeze and the stem has room to grow wider. Strawberry, pumpkin, squash, cucumber, and tomato plants need support as they bear fruit. Melons and squash require hammocks made of old nylons, string, a sling, or other stretchy fabric to support the heavy produce. These plants take up less space on the ground this way, which allows you to have walking room in between plants or fit even more of them.
Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near an arbor or trellis so they'll climb it and give you both beauty and shade. Vines that are native to your area are a good choice for success and attract pollinators. Morning glories, honeysuckle, and clematis are common options for creating a shady and beautiful archway or pathway. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sunlight you receive, as some like full sun and others don't. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers, so you can enjoy a delightful fragrance in the cool shade.
