Frequently Asked Questions About Gardening

What can I do about weeds in the grass?

Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down landscape fabric liner to keep them at bay. Be sure to get rid of weeds before they go to seed. Pull out weeds from the root in gardens you'll be eating from, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pets and pollinators — and wear a respirator and heavy-duty rubber gloves to ensure that the chemical doesn't touch your lungs or skin.

Is my lawn dead?

It could be, but it's also likely napping during those soaring temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer, so it's alive but sleeping. You can check on it though: If you tug on a grass blade and it pulls right out, it's time to plant new sod or seed because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply and infrequently. Warm-season grass needs water every few days in the summer. It should stay green if it's healthy.

Why should I use vertical gardening at home?

As the plants and veggies grow, it's easier to keep your harvest healthy. You can see any pests or evidence of wildlife eating your produce and act accordingly. When your fruits and vegetables mature and are ready to pick, you'll see them right away, so you can enjoy them at peak freshness. If these same plants grow along the ground, it's easy to miss your harvest under the shadowy leaves. Supporting the plants as they grow upright means your upkeep will be less overwhelming when you harvest your garden veggies.

How do I fertilize my flower garden?

Once you've planted your plants or flowers, ensure they stay well-fed and hydrated. Choose an organic or a synthetic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for whatever you're growing, whether you need a shrub fertilizer, fruit tree fertilizer, or a garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as instructed on the packaging. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the fertilizer won't burn the plants.

How can I create shade?

When you need a break from gardening in the sun, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. Attach awnings and sun sails to the shed or house for shade. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's extremely humid. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

How do I make my backyard look special for entertaining?

Spending time with friends in gorgeous summertime weather makes the season even more special. But you don't need to do a full patio makeover or to create your patio collection from scratch to do it. Even a minor backyard refresh can make a big difference. A string of outdoor lights, new outdoor lounge furniture, or even an outdoor rug can bring character to a backyard.

As we stretch into summer, your garden and landscaping will weather more sun and heat than earlier in the season. You'll want to consider how to keep things cool with irrigation and proper tending. You might also need ways to beat the heat. Let us help. At your Garden Center in Grand Parkway, we've got what you need to make the most of summer.

Lawn Repair and Patching
Burnt, or scorched, grass has a distinctively shaped discolored area that isn't green. It happens when plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight or a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn. You'll find it when you disturb something that's been sitting out in the yard, like a sprinkler. Car mirrors or windows can also scorch grass when the sun angle is right.

Water scorched grass well and wait a week. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged beyond repair by extreme wear or pet behavior, you'll need to replace the grass or use patch and repair seed to fix it up.

Whether you're doing upkeep on your current lawn or patching the sparse spots, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the grass type to how much sun your lawn gets — or to the existing grass type if you're doing patch repair. In other words, if your lawn gets full sun, make sure you plant sod that thrives in full sun instead of a type that prefers shade or dappled sun.

Watch Your Garden Thrive
Water your garden to keep it alive between rainstorms. A general rule when watering flowers is to aim the water at the roots. A sprinkler or sprinkler system, garden hose, or drip irrigation system can get the job done. Contrary to popular belief, the blooms themselves don't need to be watered or even misted. Many flowers wilt when wet, but they'll recover just fine when they dry off. Succulents are the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

In addition to watering, keep an eye on your plants' nutrient intake. Use fertilizer as recommended. We've even got fertilizers to match the plants you're growing so they'll absorb the necessary nutrients.

Grow Your Own Herbs
For fresh flavors to accent your homegrown produce, add herbs. They grow easily in pots, both indoors and outdoors, and are usually low-maintenance. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll endure the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden.

It can be tricky to plant herbs in the ground, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your yard. So keep them in small decorative pots on a sunny porch, window sill, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in soil. Instead, they grow in a mixture of rock chips, sand, or perlite.

Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are the ultimate natural source of shade, They can change the look of your yard. Whether you plant a few trees or a forest, keep in mind this is a long-term commitment. Trees live many decades when they're healthy. Before you shop, look into how to plant a tree, whether they're evergreens, deciduous tree saplings, or more mature trees.

Although trees framing a house may look picturesque, you should research the specifics of those trees before you plant them. Consider how far the root ball extends outward, the full-grown size of the trees you want, and how deep the taproots go. Trees will always find the easiest source of water, so be sure to plant them away from the water lines so they won't be damaged by moisture-seeking roots. As majestic as trees are, it's important to also consider how and where they'd fall if a significant storm or disease weakened them. If you've planned accordingly, found trees you love, and know the best places to put them, get planting. That way, you can enjoy the leaves rustling in the breeze and dappled shade sooner rather than later.
