Frequently Asked Questions About Gardening

How do I treat weeds in the grass?

Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch or a landscape fabric liner to keep them at bay. Pull weeds from the root in edible gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. Be sure to get them before the weeds' flowers dry out and and drop their seeds. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear a respirator and heavy rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't touch your lungs or skin.

How do I fix burned grass?

The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is easy: Fix the scorched spot with a long drink. Simply rehydrate those roots. It should perk up by the following week. The method for how to treat grass from dog urine isn't as straightforward. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replanted in fresh soil with new grass seed, sod, or patch and repair grass seed.

When should I water my vegetable garden?

If you can water during the early morning or in the evening, that's ideal. Watering during the heat of the day means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: grass, veggies, bushes, and plants. Give all the plants a thorough drink. The plants still need hydration regardless of the time on the clock. Depending on your grass type, lawn's health, and climate, you may also want to look into applying an organic lawn fertilizer.

When do I fertilize my flowers?

Once you've planted your plants or flowers, you'll need to make sure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for whatever you're growing, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, or a general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as directed on the packaging. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.

How can I keep cool this summer?

When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter under a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. Add awnings and sun sails to the house or shed for shade. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's extremely humid. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

How can I make my backyard look special for entertaining?

Spending time with friends in gorgeous summertime weather makes the season even more special. But you don't need to do a full patio makeover or to create your own patio furniture collection from scratch to do it. Even a minor backyard refresh can make a big difference. New outdoor lounge furniture, outdoor rugs, or even outdoor string lights can breathe new life into an outdoor space.

As summer rolls in, your landscaping and garden will weather more intense heat and UV rays than earlier in the season. You'll want to consider how to keep things cool with shade and irrigation. You might also need ways to beat the heat. Let us help. At The Home Depot Tool Garden Center in Hutto, we've got what you need to make the most of summer.

Lawn Repair and Patching
Burnt, or scorched, grass has an oddly shaped discolored spot that looks yellow. It happens when plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight or a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn. You'll often discover it when you move something sitting out in the yard, like a garden hose or trash can. Car windows or mirrors can also scorch grass when the sun angle is right.

Water scorched grass well and wait a week. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged beyond repair by pet behavior or extreme wear, you'll need to replace the grass or use patch and repair seed to fix it up.

Whether you're patching a lawn or doing upkeep on your current one, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the grass type to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. For example, if your lawn is shaded by buildings and gets partial shade or dappled sun, make sure you plant sod that prefers shade.

Watch Your Garden Thrive
As outlined in these garden watering tips, much of the upkeep comes down to balancing sunlight and water. You'll need both to keep your spirits high and your garden growing with summer flowering. A general rule when watering flowers and plants is to aim the water at the roots. A garden hose, drip irrigation system, or sprinkler will work well. The blooms themselves don't need to be watered or even misted. Many flowers droop when they get but recover once they dry. Succulents are, of course, the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

In addition to watering them regularly, keep an eye on your plants' nutrient intake. Add fertilizer as recommended. We've even got fertilizers to match the plants you're growing so they'll get the correct nutrients.

Vertical Vegetable Gardening
For summer gardening, grow vegetables vertically for a smart use of space. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a trellis or fence, so plant them next to one. The key to success is supporting the stem, branches, and fruit. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the stem or branches.

Fasten the plant to a pole, fence, or trellis with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to tie each plant loosely. Then the stem has room to grow wider and the branches and leaves can sway in the breeze. Strawberries, pumpkins, squash, cucumbers, and tomatoes need support as they bear fruit. Squash and melons require hammocks made of string, old nylons, a sling, or other stretchy fabric to support the weighty produce. These plants take up less space on the ground when grown vertically, which allows you to fit more plants or have walking room in between.

Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are a natural source of shade, and they can change the look of your yard. Whether you plant a few trees or a forest, remember this is a long-term commitment. When they're healthy, trees live many decades — and some for hundreds of years. Before you shop, read up on how to plant a tree, whether they're evergreens, deciduous tree saplings, or more mature trees.

A backyard woodland can be the stuff of dreams, but research what you're planting beforehand. Consider how deep the taproots go, how far the roots extend outward, and the full-grown size of the trees you want. Plant your trees far from water pipes, as their strong roots will seek water and curl into piping to get it. Leave a safe distance from your home, as large trees can catch the wind if not properly pruned. If you've planned accordingly, found trees you love, and know the perfect places to put them, get planting. That way, you can enjoy the leaves rustling in the breeze and dappled shade sooner rather than later.
