How do I treat weeds?
Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch or a landscape fabric liner to keep them at bay. Pull weeds from the root in edible gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. Be sure to get them before the weeds' flowers dry out and and drop their seeds. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pets and pollinators — and wear a respirator and heavy-duty rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't touch your skin or your lungs.
Is my yard dead?
It could be, but it's also likely napping during those soaring summer temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer, so it's alive but sleeping. You can check on it though: If you tug on a grass blade and it pulls right out, it's time to plant new sod or seed because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply once every week. Warm-season grass needs water every few days in the summer. It should stay green if it's healthy.
When should I water my shrubs?
Ideally, water early in the morning. The next best time is in the evening, when the sun is setting. A noon or mid-day watering will evaporate quickly, so come back with an evening watering if possible. This applies to whatever you're growing: plants, vegetables, trees, and grass. Give all the plants a thorough drink. The plants still need hydration regardless of the time on the clock. Depending on your climate, grass type, and lawn health, you may also want to look into applying an organic lawn fertilizer.
When do I fertilize my garden?
Once you've planted your flowers or plants, ensure they stay well-fed and hydrated. Choose an organic or a synthetic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for whatever you're growing, whether you need a tomato fertilizer, shrub fertilizer, or a general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as directed on the packaging. More is not better here. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the fertilizer won't burn the plants.

If you have sturdy structures like a shed or house, make your own shade by attaching awnings and shade sails. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's too humid. How do I entertain on the patio?

Grow a Healthy Lawn
If you're worried that your lawn has dry and crispy blades of grass, don't worry. It's possible that you've got a cool season grass that goes dormant and turns brown in the blazing summer sun. If that's the case, it won't be a patchy brown, but brown everywhere. See if the roots are alive by tugging on a blade of grass: If it comes right out, the grass is likely dead and you'll need to replace it. If the piece of grass doesn't come right out, it's dormant. That means it's growing and resting beneath the surface. Water dormant grass deeply once or twice per week, but don't fertilize it.
Warm-season grass stays green in the summer. If you have this kind of lawn, water it deeply once a week. Give it another drink every day or two, depending on your weather. Avoid overwatering, and allow the lawn to dry out after heavy rains before you get out the garden hose or sprinkler again. If it's especially hot out, water when the top two inches of soil is dry to the touch. It's ok to let it grow taller this time of the year, as cutting it too short isn't healthy for this kind of lawn.
Watch Your Garden Thrive
Water your garden to keep it alive between rainstorms. A general rule when watering flowers is to aim the water at the roots. A garden hose, sprinkler or sprinkler system, or drip irrigation system will work well. The blooms themselves don't need to be watered or even misted. Many flowers wilt when but recover when they dry. Succulents are the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

So keep them in small decorative pots on a sunny porch, window sill, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in regular black dirt. Instead, they grow in a mixture of rock chips, sand, or perlite.

Plant vines near a trellis or arbor so they'll climb the structure and give you both beauty and shade. Go with vines that are native to your area to attract pollinators. Grape vines are a classic choice, but they take time to mature, so you'll have shade without grapes for a few years. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sunshine you receive, as some like full sun and others don't. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers with a delightful fragrance you can enjoy as you cool off in the shade.
