What are good ways to get rid of weeds?
Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch to keep them at bay. Pull weeds from the root in gardens you'll be eating from, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. Be sure to get rid of weeds before the weeds' flowers dry out and and drop their seeds. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pets and pollinators — and wear a respirator mask and heavy-duty rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't touch your lungs or skin.
How do I fix scorched grass?
Just rehydrate those roots. The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is simple: Fix the burnt spot with a quenching drink, then continue to water it regularly. It should perk up within the next week. On the other hand, the news for how to treat grass from dog urine isn't as simple. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replanted in fresh soil with new grass, or patch and repair grass seed.
Why should I use vertical gardening at home?
As the veggies and plants grow, it's easier to keep your harvest healthy. You can see evidence of wildlife or other pests eating your produce and treat the issue as you see fit. When your fruits and vegetables mature and are ready to pick, you'll see them right away, so you can enjoy them at their freshest. If these same plants grow along the ground, you may miss your harvest among the shadowy leaves. Supporting the plants as they grow upright means your upkeep will be less overwhelming when they're huge at the end of summer.
How do I fertilize my garden?
Once you've planted your plants or flowers, make sure they stay well-fed and hydrated. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for whatever you're growing, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, tomato fertilizer, or a general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as directed on the packaging. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the fertilizer won't burn the plants.
How can I create shade?
When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. Attach awnings and shade sails to the house or shed to create shadowy spots to rest under. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's too humid. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Go back to enjoying the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.
How do I create an outdoor oasis for entertaining?
Spending time with friends in gorgeous weather makes the season even more special. But you don't need a full patio makeover or to create your own patio conversation sets from scratch to do it. Even a minor backyard refresh can make a big difference. New outdoor lounge furniture, outdoor rugs, or even a string of outdoor lights can bring character to an outdoor space.

As we stretch into summer, your landscaping and garden will weather more heat and sun than earlier in the year. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with irrigation, proper tending, and shade. You might also need ways to beat the heat. We've got advice to help you, your lawn, and your garden make it through the hotter months with flying colors.
Grow a Healthy Lawn
If you're worried that your lawn has dry and crispy blades of grass, don't panic. It's possible that you've got a cool season grass that goes dormant and turns brown in the summertime heat. If that's the case, it'll be brown overall instead of in patches. Gently tug out a blade of grass to check the roots: If it comes right out, the grass is likely dead and will need to be replaced with new grass seed or sod. If it doesn't come right out, it's dormant. That means it's resting but still growing beneath the surface. Dormant grass should be watered deeply once or twice a week — if it doesn't rain — but don't fertilize it.
For warm-season grass that stays green in the summer, water a bit every few days and deeply once a week. The amount of water should add up to about an inch, more or less, per week. Be careful not to overwater, and let the lawn dry out after heavy rains before you get out the sprinkler or hose again. Water your lawn when the top two inches of soil is dry to the touch. You can test with your finger. This might happen quicker than you'd think during extreme hot spells or periods of drought. It's ok to let the grass grow a little taller this time of the year, as cutting it too short isn't healthy for this kind of lawn.
Care for Your Shrubs and Trees
When you're making sure your garden is watered, don't forget about the trees, shrubs, and bushes. They may need less watering than vegetable plants or delicate flowers, but they can still get dry and parched in the summer heat. It's not hard to learn how to water trees and shrubs — just be sure to aim the water at the roots. It'll help prolong the foliage and keep it from turning yellow or brown.
Also, check for damaged areas on the trees and bushes. Pests can wreak havoc on your greenery if you don't catch them in time. Look for holes in leaves, strange raised scars on the bark, or spots on bark or leaves. When your leaves look like lace, caterpillars or insects are eating them. Spots may indicate many issues ranging from fungus to bugs. Those scar-like lines on tree bark could mean your tree is infected with borers, an insect that lays eggs inside the bark and then burrows out after it hatches. Any of these issues should be researched and cared for as soon as possible, as they may end the life of your tree or shrub.
Vertical Edible Gardening
If you like to grow your own food, take it vertical and consider growing organically. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a trellis or fence, so plant them next to one and watch them climb. Support the stem itself, as well as the junctions just below where the branches grow off the stem. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the branches or stem.
Fasten the plant to a pole or trellis with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to attach each plant loosely. Then the stem has room to grow wider and the leaves and branches can sway in the breeze. Strawberry, pumpkin, squash, cucumber, and tomato plants need support as they bear fruit. Squash and melons require hammocks made of stretchy fabric, string, old nylons, or a sling to support the heavy produce. These plants take up less space on the ground when grown vertically, which allows you to have walking room in between plants or fit more of them.
Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are a natural source of shade, They can change the look of your yard. Whether you plant a few trees or a small forest, keep in mind this is a long-term commitment. When they're healthy, trees live many decades — and some for hundreds of years. Before you shop, plan so you know how to plant a tree, whether they're evergreens, deciduous tree saplings, or more mature trees.
A backyard forest can be the stuff of dreams, but research the trees you're planting beforehand. Think about how far the root ball extends outward, the full-grown size of the trees, and how deep the taproots go. Plant your trees far from underground plumbing, as their strong roots will seek water and curl into piping to get it. Leave a safe distance from your home, as large trees can catch the wind if not properly pruned. If you've planned accordingly, found trees you love, and know the perfect places to put them, get planting. That way, you can enjoy the leaves rustling in the breeze and dappled shade sooner rather than later.
