Frequently Asked Questions About Gardening

How do I treat weeds?

Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down landscape fabric liner or mulch to keep them at bay. Pull weeds from the root in vegetable or edible flower gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. Be sure to get them before they go to seed. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pollinators and pets — and wear a respirator and heavy rubber gloves to ensure that the chemical doesn't touch your skin or your lungs.

How do I fix yellow grass?

You'll need to rehydrate those roots. The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is easy: Fix the burnt spot with a long drink, then continue to water it regularly. It should perk up over the course of a week. The method for how to treat grass from dog urine isn't as simple. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replanted in fresh soil with new grass, sod, or patch and repair grass seed.

When should I water my shrubbery?

If you can water during the early morning or in the evening, that's ideal. Watering during the heat of the day means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: grass, vegetables, bushes, and plants. Give all the plants a thorough drink. The plants still need hydration regardless of the time. Depending on your grass type, climate, and lawn health, you may also want to look into applying a lawn fertilizer.

How do I fertilize my veggie garden?

Once you've planted your flowers or plants, ensure they stay well-fed and hydrated. Choose an organic or a synthetic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, fruit tree fertilizer, or a general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as instructed on the packaging. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.

Can I make shady places to stay cool in the summer?

When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a house or shed, make your own shade by attaching awnings and shade sails. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's extremely humid. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and transform a stifling afternoon into a relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

How do I create an outdoor oasis for entertaining?

Spending time with friends in gorgeous weather makes the season even more special. But you don't need a full backyard makeover or to create your own patio furniture collection from scratch to do it. Even a minor backyard refresh can make a big difference. A new outdoor rug, outdoor lounge furniture, or even a string of outdoor lights can bring character to a backyard.

As the calendar turns to summer, your garden and landscaping will weather more heat and sun than earlier in the year. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with shade and irrigation. You might also need ways to beat the heat. We've got advice to make it through the hotter months with flying colors.

Lawn Repair and Patching
Scorched, or burnt, grass has a distinctively shaped discolored spot that looks yellow. It happens when a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn or metal or plastic sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight. You'll usually find it when you move something sitting out in the yard, like a trash can. Car mirrors or windows can also scorch grass when the sun angle is just right.

Water scorched grass well and wait a week. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged by pet urine or otherwise unsalvageable, you'll need to replace the grass or use patch and repair seed to fix it up.

Whether you're doing upkeep on your current lawn or patching the sparse spots, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the grass type to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. In other words, if your lawn is shaded by trees and gets partial shade or dappled sun, make sure you plant grass that's not meant for full sun.

Watch Your Garden Thrive
Much of your garden's upkeep comes down to balancing sun and hydration. You'll need both to keep your flowers growing and spirits high with summer flowering. A general rule when watering flowers and plants is to aim the water at the roots. A drip irrigation system, sprinkler or sprinkler system, or garden hose will do the job. You don't need to water or even mist the blooms themselves. Many flowers wilt and droop when they get wet, but they'll recover just fine once they dry. Succulents are an exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

In addition to watering, monitor your plants' nutrient intake. Add fertilizer as recommended. We've even got fertilizers to match the plants you're growing so they'll enjoy a balanced diet with the correct nutrients.

Vertical Vegetable Gardening
If you like to grow your own food, take it vertical and consider growing organically. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a trellis or fence, so plant them next to one and watch them climb. Support the stem itself, as well as the junctions just below where the branches grow off the stem. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the stem or branches.

Fasten the plant to a fence, trellis, or pole with twine, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to tie each plant loosely. Then the stem has room to grow wider and the branches and leaves can sway in the breeze. Strawberries, tomatoes, squash, cantaloupe and cucumbers need support as they bear fruit. Melons and squash require hammocks made of stretchy fabric, string, old nylons, or a sling to support the weighty produce. These plants take up less space on the ground when grown vertically, which allows you to fit more plants or have walking room in between.

Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near a trellis or arched arbor so they'll climb it and give you both beauty and shade. Viney plants that are native to your area are a good choice for success and attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Jasmine, wisteria, and ivy are common options for creating a shady and beautiful archway or pathway. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sunlight you receive, as some like full sun and others don't. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers with a delightful fragrance you can enjoy as you cool off in the shade.
