As summer rolls in, your landscaping and garden will weather more sun and heat than earlier in the year. You'll want to consider how to keep things cool with proper tending, shade, and irrigation. Lawn Repair and Patching
Burnt, or scorched, grass has a distinctively shaped discolored patch that looks yellow. It happens when a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn or plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight. You'll find it when you disturb something sitting out in the yard, like a trash can. Car windows or mirrors can also scorch grass when the sun angle is right.

Water burnt grass well and wait a week or so. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged beyond repair by pet behavior or extreme wear, you'll need to use patch and repair seed to fix it up or replace the grass.

Whether you're patching a lawn or doing upkeep on your current one, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the grass type to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. For example, if your lawn is shaded by buildings and gets partial shade or dappled sun, make sure you plant sod that prefers shade.

Care for Your Shrubs and Trees
When you're making sure your garden is watered, don't forget about the bushes, trees, and shrubs. They may need less watering than delicate flowers, but they can still get dry and parched in the summer heat. It's not hard to learn how to water trees and shrubs — just be sure to aim the water at the roots. It'll help grow strong leaves and flowers. If it's a fruiting tree, it'll also help give it enough moisture to put out blossoms and fruit and keep it from drying out.

Also, check for damaged areas on the shrubs and trees. Pests can wreak havoc on your greenery if you don't catch them in time. Look for leaves full of holes, a network of raised lines on tree bark, or spots on leaves or bark. When your leaves look like lace, insects or caterpillars are eating them. Spots may indicate a number of issues ranging from fungus to bugs. Those scar-like lines on tree bark could mean your tree is infected with borers, an insect that lays eggs inside the bark and then burrows out after it hatches. Any of these issues should be researched and cared for as soon as possible, as a severe case may kill all or part of your bushes or trees.

Grow Your Own Herbs
For fresh flavors to accent your homegrown produce, try herb gardening. They're generally low-maintenance and grow easily in pots, both indoors and outdoors. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll endure the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden.

Planting herbs in the ground can be tricky, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your yard. So just keep them in small decorative pots on a sunny porch, window sill, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in soil. Instead, they grow in a mix of rock chips, perlite, or sand.

Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are a natural source of shade, and they can change the look of your yard. Whether you plant a few trees or a forest, keep in mind this is a long-term commitment. Trees live many decades when they're healthy. Before you shop, plan so you know how to plant a tree, whether they're evergreens, deciduous tree saplings, or more mature trees.

A house framed by beautiful trees can seem picture-perfect, but research the specific trees you want before planting them. Consider how far the root ball extends outward, the full-grown size of the trees you want, and how deep the taproots go. Trees will always find the most accessible source of water, so be sure to plant them away from the water lines so they won't be damaged by moisture-seeking roots. As majestic as trees are, it's important to also consider how and where they'd fall if a severe storm or disease weakened them. If you've planned accordingly, found trees you love, and know the ideal places to put them, get planting. That way, you can enjoy the leaves rustling in the breeze and dappled shade sooner rather than later.
