What can I do about weeds?

Is my lawn dead?

You can check though: If you tug on a grass blade and it pulls right out, it's time to plant new seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply and infrequently. Warm-season grass needs water every few days in the summer. It should stay green if it's healthy.
When should I water my garden?
Ideally, water early in the morning. The next best time is in the evening, when the sun is setting. Watering during the heat of the day means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: plants, veggies, bushes, and grass. Give all the plants a thorough drink, and don't skip it just because it's not the best time. The plants still need hydration regardless of the time. Depending on your lawn's health, grass type, and climate, you may also want to look into applying an organic lawn fertilizer.
What are some tips to keep my plants healthy?
After you've planted your flowers or plants, ensure they stay well-fed and hydrated. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, shrub fertilizer, or a general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as suggested on the packaging. More is not better here. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.

Grow a Healthy Lawn
If you're concerned that your lawn has dried-out and brown blades of grass, don't worry. It's possible that you've got a cool season grass that goes to sleep and turns brown in the blazing summer sun. If that's the case, it won't be a patchy brown, but brown all over. See if the roots are alive by tugging on a blade of grass: If it comes right out, the grass is probably dead and will need to be replaced with new sod or grass seed. If the piece of grass doesn't come right out, it's dormant. That means it's resting but still alive underground. Water dormant grass deeply once or twice every week, but avoid fertilizer.
Warm-season grass stays green in the summer. If you have this kind of lawn, water it deeply once a week. Give it another drink every day or two, depending on your weather. Avoid overwatering, and let the lawn dry out after heavy rains before you get out the garden hose or sprinkler again. If it's especially hot out, water when the top two inches of soil is dry to the touch. It's ok to let it grow a little taller this time of the year, as cutting your lawn too short isn't healthy for it.
Care for Your Shrubs and Trees
When you're making sure your garden is watered, don't forget about the shrubs, bushes, and trees. They may need less watering than delicate flowers, but they can still get parched and dry in the summer heat. It's not hard to learn how to water trees — just make sure you aim the water at the roots. It'll help prolong the greenery and keep it from drying out.
Also, check for damaged areas on the bushes and trees. Pests can wreak havoc on your greenery if you don't catch them in time. Look for spots on bark or leaves, holes in leaves, or a network of raised lines on the bark. When your leaves look like lace, insects or caterpillars are eating them. Spots may indicate a number of issues ranging from fungus to bugs. Those scar-like lines on tree bark could mean your tree is infected with borers, an insect that lays eggs inside the bark and then burrows out after it hatches. Any of these issues should be researched and cared for as soon as possible, as a severe case may kill part or all of your shrub.
Vertical Edible Gardening
If you like to grow your own food, take it vertical and consider growing organically. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a trellis or fence, so plant them next to one and watch them climb. Support the stem itself, as well as the junctions right below where the branches grow off the stem. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the stem or branches.
Fasten your plant to a trellis, pole, or tomato cage with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to tie each plant loosely. Then the branches and leaves can sway in the breeze and the stem has room to grow wider. Strawberry, cantaloupe, squash, cucumber, and tomato plants need support as they bear fruit. Melons and squash require hammocks made of stretchy fabric, string, old nylons, or a sling to support the heavy produce. These plants take up less space on the ground when grown vertically, which allows you to have walking room in between plants or fit more of them.

Trees are a natural source of shade, and they can change the look of your yard. Whether you plant a few trees as accents, a few more to bear fruit, or a whole mini-forest, remember this is a long-term commitment. Trees live many decades when they're healthy. Before you shop, look into how to plant a tree, whether they're deciduous trees, evergreen saplings, or more mature trees.
A backyard forest may be the stuff of dreams, but research what you're planting beforehand. Consider how deep the taproots go, how far the root ball extends outward, and the full-grown size of the trees. Trees will always find the easiest source of water, so be sure to plant them away from the water lines so they won't be damaged by moisture-seeking roots. A tree with a full canopy of leaves catches wind like a sail, so make sure it's planted a safe distance from your home. If you've planned accordingly, found trees you love, and know the best places to put them, get planting.
