How do I treat weeds?

Is my lawn dead?

Here's how you can check on it: If you tug on a grass blade and it pulls right out, it's time to plant new sod or seed because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply but not often. Warm-season lawns need water every few days in the summer. Those lawns stay green if they're healthy.
Should I grow squash vertically?

Lawn Repair and Patching
Burnt, or scorched, grass has a distinctively shaped discoloration that looks yellow. It happens when a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn or metal or plastic sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight. You'll often find it when you disturb something sitting out in the yard, like a trash can. Car windows or mirrors can also scorch grass when the sun angle is right.
Water burnt grass well and wait a week or so. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged by pet urine or otherwise unsalvageable, you'll need to use patch and repair seed to fix it up or replace the grass.
Whether you're patching a lawn or doing upkeep on your current one, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the grass type to how much sun your lawn gets — or to the existing grass type if you're doing patch repair. In other words, if your lawn gets full sun, make sure you plant grass that thrives in the sunlight instead of a type that likes dappled sun or shade.
Care for Your Trees and Shrubs
When you're making sure your garden is watered, don't forget about the shrubs, trees, and bushes. They may need less watering than delicate flowers or vegetable plants, but they can still get dry and parched in the summer heat. It's not hard to learn how to water bushes and trees — just be sure to aim the water at the roots. It'll help prolong the greenery and keep it from turning brown or yellow.
Also, check for damaged areas on the shrubs and trees. Pests can wreak havoc on your greenery if you don't catch them in time. Look for spots on bark or leaves, leaves full of holes, or strange raised scars on the bark. When your leaves look like lace, insects or caterpillars are eating them. Spots may indicate many issues ranging from fungus to bugs. Those scar-like lines on tree bark could mean your tree is infected with borers, an insect that lays eggs inside the bark and then burrows out after it hatches. Any of these issues should be researched and cared for as soon as possible, as a severe case may kill all or part of your shrub or tree.
Vertical Edible Gardening
If you like to grow your own food, take it vertical and consider growing organically. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a fence or trellis, so plant them next to one. Support the stem itself, as well as the junctions just below where the branches grow off the stem. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the branches or stem.
Fasten your plant to a pole or trellis with twine, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to attach each plant loosely. Then the stem has room to grow wider and the leaves and branches can sway in the breeze. Strawberries, tomatoes, squash, pumpkins and cucumbers need support as they bear fruit. Squash and melons require hammocks made of old nylons, string, a sling, or other stretchy fabric to support the heavy produce. All of these plants take up less space on the ground when grown vertically, which allows you to have walking room in between plants or fit even more of them.

Plant vines to climb an arched arbor or trellis to provide both shade and beauty. Vine plants that are native to your area are a good choice for success and attract bees and other pollinators. Wisteria, jasmine, and ivy are common options for creating a shady and beautiful archway or pathway. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sun you receive, as some like full sun and others don't. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers with a delightful fragrance you can enjoy as you cool off in the shade.
