Frequently Asked Questions About Gardening

How do I treat weeds in my flower garden?

Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch to keep them at bay. Be sure to get rid of weeds before the weeds' flowers dry out and and drop their seeds. Pull out weeds from the root in vegetable or edible flower gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pollinators and pets — and wear a respirator and heavy rubber gloves to ensure that the chemical doesn't touch your skin or your lungs.

How do I fix grass damaged by pets?

The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is simple: Fix the scorched spot with a good drink. Simply rehydrate those roots. It should perk up within a week. On the other hand, the news for how to treat grass from dog urine isn't as straightforward. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replaced in fresh soil with new grass seed, sod, or patch and repair grass seed.

What are some vertical gardening benefits?

As the veggies and plants grow, keeping your harvest healthy is easier. You can see evidence of wildlife or other pests eating your produce and act accordingly. When your fruits and vegetables mature and are ready to pick, you'll see them right away, so you can enjoy them at their freshest. If these same plants grow along the ground, it's easy to miss your harvest under the shadowy leaves. Supporting the plants as they grow upright means your upkeep will be less overwhelming when you harvest your garden veggies.

What are some tips to keep my plants healthy?

After you've planted your plants or flowers, make sure they're well-fed and hydrated. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for whatever you're growing, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, tomato fertilizer, or a general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as recommended on the packaging. More is not better here. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.

Can I make shady places to stay cool in the summer?

When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. Attach awnings and shade sails to the house or shed to create shadowy spots to rest under. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's extremely humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and transform a stifling afternoon into a relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

How do I create an outdoor oasis for entertaining?

Spending time with friends in gorgeous weather makes the season even more special. But you don't need to do a full backyard makeover or to create your own patio conversation sets from scratch to do it. Even a minor backyard refresh can make a big difference. A string of outdoor lights, new outdoor lounge furniture, or even an outdoor rug can add character to a backyard oasis.

As we stretch into summer, your garden and landscaping will weather more intense heat and UV rays than earlier in the season. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with irrigation, shade, and proper tending. Just like we can get sunburned, bulb flowers can dry out, trees can lose their leaves prematurely, and grass can get scorched. We've got advice to help your garden, your lawn, and your family make it through the hotter months with flying colors.

Lawn Repair and Patching
Burnt, or scorched, grass has a distinctively shaped discoloration that isn't green. It happens when plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight or a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn. You'll discover it when you disturb something that's been sitting out in the yard, like a garden hose or trash can. Car mirrors or windows can also scorch grass when the sun angle is right.

Water scorched grass well and wait a week. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged by pet urine or otherwise unsalvageable, you'll need to replace the grass or use patch and repair seed to fix it up.

Whether you're patching a lawn or doing upkeep on your current one, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the kind of grass to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. In other words, if your lawn is shaded by buildings and gets dappled sun or partial shade, make sure you plant sod that prefers shade.

Care for Your Shrubs and Trees
When you're making sure your garden is watered, don't forget about the shrubs, bushes, and trees. They may need less watering than delicate flowers, but they can still get parched and dry in the summer heat. It's not hard to learn how to water bushes and trees — just aim the water at the roots. It'll help grow strong leaves and flowers. If it's a fruiting tree, it'll also help give it enough moisture to put out blossoms and fruit and keep it from drying out.

Also, check for damaged areas on the bushes, trees, and shrubs. Pests can wreak havoc on your greenery if you don't catch them in time. Look for leaves full of holes, spots on bark or leaves, or strange raised scars on tree bark. When your leaves look like lace, caterpillars or insects are eating them. Spots may indicate several issues ranging from bugs to fungus. Those scar-like lines on tree bark could mean your tree is infected with borers, an insect that lays eggs inside the bark and then burrows out after it hatches. Any of these issues should be researched and cared for as soon as possible, as they may end the life of your shrub.

Vertical Vegetable Gardening
Grow produce vertically for a smart use of space. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a trellis or fence, so plant them next to one. Support the stem itself, as well as the junctions right below where the branches grow off the stem. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the stem or branches.

Fasten the plant to a pole or tomato cage with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to tie each plant loosely. Then the stem has room to grow wider and the branches and leaves can sway in the breeze. Strawberry, cantaloupe, squash, cucumber, and tomato plants need support as they bear fruit. Squash and melons require hammocks made of stretchy fabric, string, old nylons, or a sling to support the heavy produce. All of these plants take up less space on the ground this way, which allows you to have walking room in between plants or fit even more of them.

Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are the ultimate natural source of shade, and they can change the look of your yard. Whether you plant a few trees or a small forest, keep in mind this is a long-term commitment. When they're healthy, trees live many decades — and some for hundreds of years. Before you shop, plan so you know how to plant a tree, whether they're evergreens, deciduous tree saplings, or more mature trees.

A backyard woodland may be the stuff of dreams, but research the trees you're planting beforehand. Think about how deep the taproots go, how far the roots extend outward, and the full-grown size of the trees you want. Plant your trees far from underground plumbing, as their strong roots will seek water and curl into piping to get it. A tree with a full canopy of leaves catches wind like a sail, so make sure it's planted a safe distance from your home. If you've planned accordingly, found trees you love, and know the perfect places to put them, get planting. That way, you can enjoy the leaves rustling in the breeze and dappled shade sooner rather than later.
