How do I treat weeds in my veggie garden?
Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch or a landscape fabric liner to keep them at bay. Pull weeds from the root in edible gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. Be sure to get rid of weeds before the weeds' flowers dry out and and drop their seeds. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pets and pollinators — and wear a respirator mask and heavy rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't touch your lungs or skin.
Is my yard dead?
It could be, but it's also likely just taking a nap during those soaring temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer, so it's alive but sleeping. Here's how you can check on it: If you tug on a grass blade and it pulls right out, it's time to plant new seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply but not often. Warm-season lawns need water every few days in the summer. Those lawns stay green if they're healthy.
What are the benefits of vertical gardening?
As the veggies and plants grow, the harvest will be easier to keep healthy. You can see evidence of wildlife or other pests eating your produce and act accordingly. When your fruits and vegetables mature and are ready to pick, you'll see them right away, so you can enjoy them at their freshest. What are some tips to keep my plants healthy?
Once you've planted your plants or flowers, ensure they're well-fed and hydrated. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for the plants you're growing, whether you need a veggie fertilizer, flower fertilizer, or a general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as directed on the packaging. More is not better here. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the fertilizer won't burn the plants.
Can I lower the humidity in my patio?
When you need a break from gardening in the sun, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. Add awnings and shade sails to the shed or house to create shady spots. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and make a stifling afternoon into a relaxing day. Go back to swinging in a hammock when that water-cooled air is ready.

Lawn Repair and Patching
Burnt, or scorched, grass has an oddly shaped discoloration that looks yellow. It happens when plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight or a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn. You'll find it once you disturb something that's been sitting out in the yard, like a sprinkler or garden hose. Car mirrors or windows can also scorch grass when the sun angle is just right.
Water scorched grass well and wait a week or so. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged beyond repair by pet behavior or extreme wear, you'll need to replace the grass or use patch and repair seed to fix it up.
Whether you're doing upkeep on your current lawn or patching the bald spots, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the kind of grass to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. For example, if your lawn is shaded by buildings and gets dappled sun or partial shade, make sure you plant sod that prefers shade.
Watch Your Garden Thrive
Water your garden to keep it going between rainstorms. A general rule when watering flowers and plants is to aim the water at the roots. A drip irrigation system, sprinkler or sprinkler system, or garden hose will work well. You don't need to water or even mist the blooms themselves. Many flowers droop and wilt when they get but recover once they dry. Succulents are an exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

Fasten the plant to a tomato cage or pole with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to tie each plant loosely. Then the stem has room to grow wider and the leaves and branches can sway in the breeze. Strawberry, watermelon, squash, cucumber, and tomato plants need support as they bear fruit. Melons and squash require hammocks made of old nylons, string, a sling, or other stretchy fabric to support the heavy produce. All of these plants take up less space on the ground when grown vertically, which allows you to fit even more plants or have walking room in between.

Trees are a stunning and natural source of shade, They can change the look of your yard. Whether you plant a few trees or a small forest, remember this is a long-term commitment. When they're healthy, trees live many decades — and some for hundreds of years. Before you shop, look into how to plant a tree, whether they're evergreens, deciduous tree saplings, or more mature trees.
Although trees framing a house may look picturesque, you should research the specifics of those trees before you plant them. Think about the full-grown size of the trees you want, how far the roots extend outward and how deep the taproots go. Plant your trees far from water pipes, as their strong roots will seek water and curl into piping to get it. As majestic as trees are, it's essential to also consider how and where they'd fall if disease or a major storm weakened them. If you've planned accordingly, found trees you love, and know the best places to put them, get planting. That way, you can enjoy the leaves rustling in the breeze and dappled shade sooner rather than later.
