Frequently Asked Questions About Gardening

How do I treat weeds in my lawn?

Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before they go to seed. Pull out weeds from the root in gardens you'll be eating from, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pets and pollinators — and wear a respirator mask and heavy-duty rubber gloves to ensure that the chemical doesn't touch your lungs or skin.

Is crispy grass dead?

It could be, but it's also likely just taking a nap during those soaring summer temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer. It isn't usually dead — just crispy and brown. Here's how you can check to see if it's dormant: If you can easily pull out a blade of grass with no resistance, it's time to plant new seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply and infrequently. Warm-season lawns need water every few days in the summer. Those lawns stay green if they're healthy.

When's the best time to water my vegetable garden?

Ideally, water early in the morning. The next best time is in the evening, when the sun is setting. Watering during the heat of the day means a lot of the moisture will evaporate. This applies to whatever you're growing: grass, trees, veggies, and plants. Whenever you water, give all the plants a thorough drink. The plants still need hydration regardless of the time. Depending on your climate, grass type, and lawn health, you may also want to look into applying an organic lawn fertilizer.

When do I fertilize my garden?

Once you've planted your flowers or plants, you'll need to make sure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a flower fertilizer, vegetable fertilizer, fruit tree fertilizer, or a general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as recommended on the packaging. More is not better here. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.

Can I lower the humidity in my patio?

When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter under a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a house or shed, make your own shade by attaching awnings and sun sails. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Go back to swinging in a hammock when that water-cooled air is ready.

What do I need for backyard entertaining?

Backyard entertaining is whatever you'd like it to be — it doesn't have to be a cookout. If you're focused on firing up the grill, make sure you know how to clean a grill afterward. Many people simply relax outdoors and chat. However you bond with friends, extend the fun into the evening with proper outdoor lighting and a bug-free summer yard without pesky mosquitos.

As we stretch into summer, your garden and landscaping will weather more intense heat and UV rays than earlier in the year. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with proper tending, shade, and irrigation. Just like we can get sunburned, garden flowers and grass can dry out, and trees can lose their leaves prematurely. We've got guidance to make it through the hotter months.

Keep It Tidy
As the weeks tick by, the grass or sod you planted will grow taller than what's ideal. You'll need to maintain it so it can look fresh and manicured again. Keep the lawn in check with a lawn mower and a string trimmer to knock down any tall grass around fences, sidewalks, or buildings.

Trees, bushes, and shrubs climb toward the sun and lose their shape over time. In the summer, they'll be growing fast, filled with buds and blooms before you know it. Prune them back to a more manicured state with garden shears and hedge trimmers. It's best to leave major tree maintenance and tree topping to the pros, but you may want to use a pole saw for minor trims and a chainsaw to shape small trees and bushes.

Watch Your Garden Thrive
As outlined in these garden watering tips, much of the upkeep comes down to balancing water and sunlight. You'll need both to keep your spirits high and greenery growing with summer flowering. A general rule when watering plants is to aim the water at the roots. A garden hose, sprinkler or sprinkler system, or drip irrigation system will work well. You don't need to water or even mist the blooms themselves. Many flowers droop and wilt when they get wet, but they'll recover just fine when they dry off. Succulents are an exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

In addition to watering, monitor your plants' nutrient intake. Use fertilizer as recommended. We've even got fertilizers to match the plants you're growing so they'll get the right nutrients.

Grow Your Own Herbs
For savory flavors to accent your homegrown produce, add herbs. They're generally low-maintenance and grow easily in pots, both indoors and outdoors. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll endure the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden.

It can be tricky to plant herbs in the ground, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your yard. So grow them in small decorative pots on a sunny window sill, porch, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in regular black dirt. Instead, they grow in a mixture of perlite, sand, or rock chips.

Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near an arched arbor or trellis so they'll climb the structure and give you both shade and beauty. Go with vine plants that are native to your area to attract bees and other pollinators. Grape vines are a classic choice, but they take time to mature, so you'll only be enjoying shade and not fruit for a few years. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sun you receive, as not all of them thrive in full sun. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers with a delightful fragrance you can enjoy as you cool off in the shade.
