Lawn Repair and Patching
Burnt, or scorched, grass has an oddly shaped discolored spot that looks yellow. It happens when a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn or plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight. You'll usually find it when you disturb something sitting out in the yard, like a trash can. Car mirrors or windows can also scorch grass when the sun angle is just right.
Water burnt grass well and wait a week. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged by pet urine or otherwise unsalvageable, you'll need to use patch and repair seed to fix it up or replace the grass.
Whether you're patching a lawn or doing upkeep on your current one, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the grass type to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. In other words, if trees or buildings shade your lawn so it gets dappled sun or partial shade, make sure you plant grass that's not meant for full sun.
Care for Your Shrubs and Trees
When you're making sure your garden is watered, don't forget about the trees, and bushes. Any of these issues should be researched and cared for as soon as possible, as a severe case may kill part or all of your trees or bushes.
Vertical Vegetable Gardening
If you like to grow your own food, take it vertical and consider growing organically. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a trellis or fence, so plant them next to one. The key to success is supporting the branches, fruit, and stem. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the branches or stem.
Fasten the plant to a pole or trellis with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to attach each plant loosely. Then the stem has room to grow wider and the branches and leaves can sway in the breeze. Strawberry, watermelon, squash, cucumber, and tomato plants need support as they bear fruit. Squash and melons require hammocks made of old nylons, string, a sling, or other stretchy fabric to support the heavy produce. All of these plants take up less space on the ground this way, which allows you to fit even more plants or have walking room in between.

Trees live many decades when they're healthy. Before you shop, plan so you know how to plant a tree, whether they're deciduous trees, evergreen saplings, or more mature trees.
Although trees framing a house may look picturesque, you should research the specifics of those trees before you plant them. Consider the full-grown size of the trees you want, how far the root ball extends outward and how deep the taproots go. Trees will always find the most accessible source of water, so be sure to plant them away from your water pipes to avoid roots growing into them. Leave a safe distance from your home, as large trees can catch the wind if not properly pruned. If you've planned accordingly, found trees you love, and know the perfect places to put them, get planting.
