Frequently Asked Questions About Gardening

What can I do about weeds in my lawn?

Weeds might start peeking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch or a landscape fabric liner to keep them at bay. Be sure to get rid of weeds before they go to seed. Pull weeds from the root in vegetable or edible flower gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pets and pollinators — and wear a respirator mask and heavy rubber gloves to ensure that the chemical doesn't touch your lungs or skin.

How do I fix burnt grass?

Simply rehydrate those roots. The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is easy: Fix the scorched spot with a quenching drink, then continue to water it regularly. It should perk up within a week. On the other hand, the method for how to treat grass from dog urine isn't as straightforward. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replaced in fresh soil with new grass, or patch and repair grass seed.

What are the benefits of vertical gardening?

As the plants and veggies grow, it's easier to keep your harvest healthy. You can see any pests or evidence of wildlife eating your produce and act accordingly. When your fruits and vegetables mature and are ready to pick, you'll see them right away, so you can enjoy them at their freshest. If these same plants grow along the ground, it's easy to miss your first harvest among the shadowy leaves. Supporting the plants as they grow upright means your upkeep will be less overwhelming when you harvest your garden veggies.

When do I fertilize my garden?

Once you've planted your plants or flowers, you'll need to make sure they stay well-fed and hydrated. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for the plants you're growing, whether you need a flower fertilizer, veggie fertilizer, shrub fertilizer, or a general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as instructed on the packaging. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.

Can I lower the humidity in my patio?

When you need a break from gardening in the sun, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a house or shed, create shade by attaching sun sails and awnings. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Go back to enjoying the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

How do I make my patio look special for entertaining?

Spending time with friends in gorgeous summertime weather makes the season even more special. But you don't need to do a full backyard makeover or to create your patio collection from scratch to do it. Even a minor backyard refresh can make a big difference. New outdoor lounge furniture, strings of outdoor lights, or even an outdoor rug can bring character to an outdoor space.

As summer rolls in, your landscaping and garden will weather more heat and sun than earlier in the year. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with irrigation and shade. You might also need ways to beat the heat. We've got guidance to help you, your lawn, and your garden make it through the hotter months with flying colors.

Lawn Repair and Patching
Scorched, or burnt, grass has a distinctively shaped discolored area that looks yellow. It happens when metal or plastic sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight or a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn. You'll usually discover it when you move something that's been sitting out in the yard, like a sprinkler. Car windows or mirrors can also scorch grass when the sun angle is right.

Water scorched grass well and wait a week. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it needs neutralizing after urine damage, you'll need to use patch and repair seed to fix it up or replace the grass.

Whether you're patching a lawn or doing upkeep on your current one, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the kind of grass to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. For example, if your lawn gets full sun, make sure you plant sod that thrives in full sun instead of shade-loving grass.

Watch Your Garden Thrive
Water your garden to keep it going between rainstorms and keep the summer flowering humming along. A general rule when watering flowers is to aim the water at the roots. A garden hose, drip irrigation system, or sprinkler will do the job. The blooms themselves don't need to be watered or even misted. Many flowers droop when they get but recover once they dry. Succulents are an exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

In addition to watering, keep an eye on the nutrients your plants are getting. Add fertilizer as recommended. We've even got fertilizers to match the plants you're growing so they'll enjoy a balanced diet with the right nutrients.

Vertical Vegetable Gardening
Grow produce vertically for a smart use of space. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a trellis or fence, so plant them next to one. Support the stem itself, as well as the junctions just below where the branches grow off the stem. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the stem or branches.

Fasten the plant to a pole, trellis, or fence with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to attach each plant loosely. Then the stem has room to grow wider and the branches and leaves can sway in the breeze. Strawberry, pumpkin, squash, cucumber, and tomato plants need support as they bear fruit. Melons and squash require hammocks made of stretchy fabric, string, old nylons, or a sling to support the weighty produce. These plants take up less space on the ground this way, which allows you to have walking room in between plants or fit more of them.

Trees as Natural Shade
Trees are a natural source of shade, and they can change the look of your yard. Whether you plant a few trees or a small forest, keep in mind this is a long-term commitment. When they're healthy, trees live many decades — and some for hundreds of years. Before you shop, look into how to plant a tree, whether they're evergreens, deciduous tree saplings, or more mature trees.

A house framed by beautiful trees can seem picture-perfect, but research the specific trees you want before planting them. Think about how deep the taproots go, how far the roots extend outward, and the full-grown size of the trees. Trees will always find the most accessible source of water, so be sure to plant them away from the water lines so they won't be damaged by moisture-seeking roots. Leave a safe distance from your home, as large trees can catch the wind if not properly pruned. If you've planned accordingly, found trees you love, and know the perfect places to put them, get planting. That way, you can enjoy natural shade and the soothing sound of leaves rustling in the breeze sooner rather than later.
