Frequently Asked Questions About Gardening

How can I get rid of weeds?

Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down landscape fabric liner to keep them at bay. Pull weeds from the root in edible gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. Be sure to get rid of weeds before the weeds' flowers dry out and and drop their seeds. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pets and pollinators — and wear a respirator mask and heavy-duty rubber gloves to ensure that it doesn't touch your skin or your lungs.

How do I fix sunburnt grass?

Just rehydrate those roots. The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is simple: Fix the burnt spot with a quenching drink, then continue to water it regularly. It should perk up over the course of a week. On the other hand, the news for how to treat grass from dog urine isn't as simple. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replaced in fresh soil with new grass, or patch and repair grass seed.

When should I water my shrubs?

Ideally, water early in the morning. The next best time is in the evening, when the sun is setting. A noon or mid-day watering will evaporate quickly, so come back with an evening watering. This applies to whatever you're growing: plants, bushes, grass, and vegetables. Give all the plants a thorough drink, and don't skip it because it's not the best time. The plants still need hydration regardless of the time. Depending on your lawn's health, grass type, and climate, you may also want to look into applying an organic lawn fertilizer.

How do I keep my garden healthy?

After you've planted your plants or flowers, ensure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for your plants, whether you need a fruit tree fertilizer, shrub fertilizer, or a general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as instructed on the packaging. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.

How can I keep cool this summer?

When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter under a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a shed or house, make your own shade by attaching awnings and shade sails. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's too humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and make a stifling afternoon into a relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

What do I need for backyard entertaining?

Backyard entertaining is whatever you'd like it to be — it doesn't have to be a gardening party. If you're focused on firing up the grill, make sure you know how to prep your grill for summer for a delicious outcome. Many people simply relax outdoors and chat. However you bond with friends, extend the fun into the evening with proper outdoor lighting. For best results, learn how to rid your yard of pesky mosquitos, too.

As the calendar turns to summer, your garden and landscaping will weather more intense heat and UV rays than earlier in the year. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with irrigation, proper tending, and shade. You might also need ways to beat the heat. We've got guidance to make it through the hotter months.

Lawn Repair and Patching
Scorched, or burnt, grass has an oddly shaped discoloration that isn't green. It happens when a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn or metal or plastic sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight. You'll usually find it once you disturb something that's been sitting out in the yard, like a garden hose or trash can. Car mirrors or windows can also scorch grass when the sun angle is just right.

Water scorched grass well and wait a week or so. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it needs neutralizing after urine damage, you'll need to use patch and repair seed to fix it up or replace the grass.

Whether you're doing upkeep on your current lawn or patching the bare spots, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the grass type to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. In other words, if your lawn is shaded by buildings and gets dappled sun or partial shade, make sure you plant sod that prefers shade.

Care for Your Shrubs and Trees
When you're making sure your garden is watered, don't forget about the shrubs and trees. They may need less watering than delicate flowers or vegetable plants, but they can still get dry and parched in the summer heat. It's not hard to learn how to water trees and shrubs — just make sure you aim the water at the roots. It'll help prolong the greenery and keep it from turning brown or yellow.

Also, check for damaged areas on the bushes, trees, and shrubs. Pests can wreak havoc on your greenery if you don't catch them in time. Look for leaves full of holes, spots on bark or leaves, or strange raised scars on the bark. When your leaves look like lace, something is eating them. Spots may indicate a number of issues ranging from bugs to fungus. Those scar-like lines on tree bark could mean your tree is infected with borers, an insect that lays eggs inside the bark and then burrows out after it hatches. Any of these issues should be researched and cared for as soon as possible, as they may end the life of your bushes or trees.

Vertical Edible Gardening
If you like to grow your own food, take it vertical and consider growing organically. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a trellis or fence, so plant them next to one. The key to success is supporting the fruit, stem, and branches. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the stem or branches.

Fasten your plant to a tomato cage or pole with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to tie each plant loosely. Then the stem has room to grow wider and the branches and leaves can sway in the breeze. Strawberry, pumpkin, squash, cucumber, and tomato plants need support as they bear fruit. Melons and squash require hammocks made of stretchy fabric, string, old nylons, or a sling to support the heavy produce. These plants take up less space on the ground when grown vertically, which allows you to fit even more plants or have walking room in between.

Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines to climb an arched arbor or trellis to provide both shade and beauty. Vine plants that are native to your area are a good choice for success and attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Jasmine, ivy, and wisteria are common options for creating a shady and beautiful archway or pathway. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sun you receive, as not all of them thrive in full sun. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers, so you can enjoy a delightful fragrance in the cool shade.
