Frequently Asked Questions About Gardening

What can I do about weeds in the yard?

Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down landscape fabric liner to keep them at bay. Be sure to get them before they go to seed. Pull out weeds from the root in edible gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pets and pollinators — and wear a respirator and heavy-duty rubber gloves to ensure that the chemical doesn't touch your lungs or skin.

Is brown grass dead?

It could be, but it's also likely napping during those soaring summer temps. Cool-season grass goes dormant in the summer, so it's alive but sleeping. Here's how you can check: If you tug on a grass blade and it pulls right out, it's time to plant new seed or sod because the grass is a goner. Water dormant lawns deeply once every week. Warm-season grass needs water every few days in the summer. It should stay green if it's healthy.

What are some vertical gardening benefits?

As the plants and veggies grow, the harvest will be easier to keep healthy. You can see evidence of wildlife or other pests eating your produce and treat the issue as you see fit. When your fruits and vegetables are ready to pick, you'll see them immediately, so you can enjoy them at peak freshness. If these same plants grow along the ground, it's easy to miss your first harvest among the shadowy leaves. Supporting the plants as they grow upright means your upkeep will be less overwhelming when you harvest your garden veggies.

What are some tips to keep my garden healthy?

Once you've planted your plants or flowers, make sure they stay hydrated and well-fed. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for whatever you're growing, whether you need a shrub fertilizer, tomato fertilizer, or a garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as instructed on the packaging. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the plants won't be burned by the fertilizer.

How can I create shade?

When you need a break from gardening in the sun, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a shed or house, make your own shade by attaching awnings and sun sails. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's too humid. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and transform a stifling afternoon into a relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

How do I entertain on the patio?

Backyard entertaining is whatever you find enjoyable — it doesn't have to be a barbeque party. If you're focused on firing up the grill, make sure you know how to clean a grill afterward. Many people simply relax outdoors and chat away the afternoon or maybe cook a meal in an outdoor kitchen instead. Whichever path you take for bonding with friends, extend the fun into the evening with proper outdoor lighting. For best results, learn how to rid your yard of pesky mosquitos, too.

As summer rolls in, your landscaping and garden will weather more intense heat and UV rays than earlier in the season. You'll want to consider how to keep things cool with proper tending, irrigation, and shade. You might also need ways to beat the heat. Let us help. At The Home Depot Tool Garden Center in West Chester, we've got what you need to make it through the hotter months with flying colors.

Lawn Repair and Patching
Scorched, or burnt, grass has an oddly shaped discolored patch that looks yellow. It happens when plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight or a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn. You'll discover it when you move something sitting out in the yard, like a garden hose or trash can. Car mirrors or windows can also scorch grass when the sun angle is just right.

Water scorched grass well and wait a week or so. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it needs neutralizing after urine damage, you'll need to use patch and repair seed to fix it up or replace the grass.

Whether you're patching a lawn or doing upkeep on your current one, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the kind of grass to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. For example, if your lawn is shaded by trees and gets partial shade or dappled sun, make sure you plant sod that prefers shade.

Watch Your Garden Thrive
You'll need to water your garden hydrate it between rainstorms and keep the summer flowering going. A general rule when watering flowers is to aim the water at the roots. A drip irrigation system, sprinkler, or garden hose will do the job. You don't need to water or even mist the blossoms themselves. Many flowers droop and wilt when they get wet, but they'll recover just fine once they dry off. Succulents are the exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

In addition to watering them regularly, monitor the nutrients your plants are getting. Apply fertilizer as recommended. We've even got fertilizers to match the plants you're growing so they'll enjoy a balanced diet with the correct nutrients.

Vertical Vegetable Gardening
If you like to grow your own food, take it vertical and consider growing organically. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a trellis or fence, so plant them next to one and watch them climb. The key to success is supporting the branches, fruit, and stem. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the branches or stem.

Fasten your plant to a trellis or pole with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to tie each plant loosely. Then the stem has room to grow wider and the leaves and branches can sway in the breeze. Strawberry, cantaloupe, squash, cucumber, and tomato plants need support as they bear fruit. Squash and melons require hammocks made of string, old nylons, a sling, or other stretchy fabric to support the weighty produce. These plants take up less space on the ground this way, which allows you to have walking room in between plants or fit even more of them.

Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near a trellis or arbor so they'll climb the structure and give you both shade and beauty. Go with vine plants that are native to your area to attract bees and other pollinators. Grape vines are a classic choice, but they take time to mature, so you'll only be enjoying shade and not fruit for a few years. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sunlight you receive, as not all of them thrive in full sun. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers, so you can enjoy a delightful fragrance in the cool shade.
