Frequently Asked Questions About Gardening

What can I do about weeds in my lawn?

Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down mulch or a landscape fabric liner to keep them at bay. Pull weeds from the root in edible flower or vegetable gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. Be sure to get rid of weeds before the weeds' flowers dry out and and drop their seeds. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for bees, other pollinators, and pets — and wear a respirator mask and heavy-duty rubber gloves to ensure that the chemical doesn't touch your lungs or skin.

How do I fix grass damaged by pets?

You'll need to rehydrate those roots. The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is easy: Fix the scorched spot with a good long drink, then continue to water it regularly. It should perk up by the following week. The method for how to treat grass from dog urine isn't as simple. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replanted in fresh soil with new grass seed, sod, or patch and repair grass seed.

Why should I use vertical gardening at home?

As the plants and veggies grow, the harvest will be easier to keep healthy. You can see any pests or evidence of wildlife eating your produce and treat the issue as you see fit. When your fruits and vegetables are ready to pick, you'll see them immediately, so you can enjoy them at their freshest. If these same plants grow along the ground, you may miss your harvest under the shadowy leaves. Supporting the plants as they grow upright means your upkeep will be less overwhelming when you harvest your garden veggies.

When do I fertilize my veggie plants?

After you've planted your plants or flowers, ensure they're hydrated and well-fed. Choose an organic or a synthetic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for whatever you're growing, whether you need a tomato fertilizer, shrub fertilizer, or a general garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as instructed on the packaging. More is not better here. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the fertilizer won't burn the plants.

Do patio misters cool the air?

When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter under a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. If you have sturdy structures like a house or shed, create shade by attaching awnings and sun sails. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's too humid. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and turn a stifling afternoon into a refreshingly relaxing day. Go back to swinging in a hammock when that water-cooled air is ready.

How do I entertain on the patio?

Backyard entertaining is whatever you find enjoyable — it doesn't have to be a garden party. If you're focused on firing up the grill, make sure you know how to clean a grill afterward. Many people simply relax outdoors and chat away the afternoon. Whichever path you take for bonding with friends, extend the fun into the evening with proper outdoor lighting and a bug-free summer yard without pesky mosquitos.

As we stretch into summer, your garden and landscaping will weather more sun and heat than earlier in the season. You'll want to consider how to keep things cool with irrigation and shade. You might also need ways to beat the heat. Let us help. At The Home Depot Willmar Garden Center, we've got what you need to make it through the hotter months with flying colors.

Keep Your Garden Tidy
As the weeks tick by, the sod or grass you planted will grow taller than what's ideal. You'll need to maintain it so it'll look fresh again. Keep the lawn in check with a riding lawn mower and a string trimmer to knock down any tall grass around trees and hardscaping.

Shrubs, trees, and bushes climb toward the sun and lose their shape over time. In the summer, they'll be growing fast, filled with buds and blooms before you know it. Prune them to better show off their verdant beauty with the best hedge trimmers for your shrubs. It's best to leave major tree maintenance and tree topping to the pros, but you may want to use a pole saw for minor trims and a chainsaw to shape bushes and small trees.

Watch Your Garden Thrive
As outlined in these garden watering tips, much of the upkeep comes down to balancing sunlight and water. You'll need both to keep plants growing and spirits high with summer flowering. A general rule when watering flowers is to aim the water at the roots. A garden hose, drip irrigation system, or sprinkler can get the job done. Contrary to popular belief, the blooms themselves don't need to be watered or even misted. Many flowers wilt and droop when they get but recover when they dry. Succulents are an exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

In addition to watering, monitor your plants' nutrient intake. Add fertilizer as recommended. We've even got fertilizers to match the plants you're growing so they'll absorb the correct nutrients.

Grow Your Own Herbs
For fresh flavors to accent your homegrown produce, add herbs. They're generally low-maintenance. It's easy to learn how to grow herbs indoors, but you can raise herbs outdoors, too. If you grow herbs outdoors, stick to heat-loving herbs that'll endure the summer temperatures, and consider a hanging herb garden.

Planting herbs in the ground can be tricky, as many of them — especially mint — are invasive and will take over your yard. So just keep them in small decorative pots on a sunny window sill, porch, or even in wall planters. Herbs also work well in a hydroponic garden, which means they don't grow in soil. Instead, they grow in a mix of rock chips, sand, or perlite.

Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines to climb a trellis or arbor to provide both beauty and shade. Go with native viney plants to attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. Wisteria, jasmine, and ivy are common options for creating a shady and beautiful archway or pathway. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sunshine you receive, as some like full sun and others don't. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers, so you can enjoy a delightful fragrance as you cool off in the shade.
