As we stretch into summer, your garden and landscaping will weather more sun and heat than earlier in the year. That means you'll need to consider how to keep things cool with shade and irrigation. Just like we can get sunburned, flowers can dry out and trees can lose their leaves prematurely. We've got advice to help you, your lawn, and your garden make it through the hotter months with flying colors.

Lawn Repair and Patching
Burnt, or scorched, grass has an oddly shaped discolored spot that isn't green. It happens when plastic or metal sits on the grass and bakes in the sunlight or a reflective surface shines continuously on your lawn. You'll often find it once you move something sitting out in the yard, like a sprinkler. Car mirrors or windows can also scorch grass when the sun angle is right.

Water scorched grass well and wait a week. You should see the signs of life returning by then. If it's damaged by pet urine or otherwise unsalvageable, you'll need to replace the grass or use patch and repair seed to fix it up.

Whether you're patching a lawn or doing upkeep on your current one, keep in mind which type of grass it is. Match the kind of grass to your lawn if you're doing patch repair. When planting new grass, choose a variety that works with the amount of sun your lawn gets. For example, if buildings shade your lawn so it gets dappled sun or partial shade, make sure you plant grass that's not meant for full sun.

Care for Your Trees and Shrubs
When you're making sure your garden is watered, don't forget about the shrubs and trees. They may need less watering than vegetable plants, but they can still get dry and parched in the summer heat. It's not hard to learn how to water trees — just make sure you aim the water at the roots. It'll help prolong the foliage and keep it from turning brown.

Also, check for damaged areas on the shrubs and trees. Pests can wreak havoc on your greenery if you don't catch them in time. Look for holes in leaves, strange raised scars on the bark, or spots on leaves or bark. When your leaves look like lace, something is eating them. Spots may indicate many issues ranging from fungus to bugs. Those scar-like lines on tree bark could mean your tree is infected with borers, an insect that lays eggs inside the bark and then burrows out after it hatches. Any of these issues should be researched and cared for as soon as possible, as they may ultimately end the life of your bushes or trees.

Vertical Edible Gardening
Grow produce vertically to conserve space. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a fence or trellis, so plant them next to one. Support the stem itself, as well as the junctions right below where the branches grow off the stem. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the branches or stem.

Fasten the plant to a fence, pole, or trellis with twine, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to tie each plant loosely. Then the stem has room to grow wider and the branches and leaves can sway in the breeze. Strawberries, tomatoes, squash, cantaloupe and cucumbers need support as they bear fruit. Squash and melons require hammocks made of stretchy fabric, string, old nylons, or a sling to support the heavy produce. All of these plants take up less space on the ground this way, which allows you to have walking room in between plants or fit more of them.

Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines to climb a trellis or arched arbor to provide both shade and beauty. Vines that are native to your area are a good choice for success and attract pollinators. Wisteria, ivy, and jasmine are common options for creating a shady and beautiful archway or pathway. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sunlight you receive, as some like full sun and others don't. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers with a delightful fragrance you can enjoy in the shade.
