Frequently Asked Questions About Gardening

What can I do about weeds?

Weeds are likely poking through in the garden beds, even if you put down landscape fabric liner or mulch to keep them at bay. Be sure to get rid of weeds before they go to seed. Pull out weeds from the root in edible gardens, and dig up the roots if the weed snapped off without them. If you'd like to treat weeds with weed killer, check that it's safe for pets and pollinators — and wear a respirator and heavy rubber gloves to ensure that the chemical doesn't touch your skin or your lungs.

How do I fix grass damaged by pets?

The solution for how to get burnt grass green again is simple: Fix the burnt spot with a good drink. Continue to water it regularly. It should perk up within the next week. On the other hand, the news for how to treat grass from dog urine isn't as simple. Grass damaged by pets must be removed, neutralized, and replanted in fresh soil with new grass, sod, or patch and repair grass seed.

Why should I use vertical gardening at home?

As the plants and veggies grow, it's easier to keep your harvest healthy. You can see any pests or evidence of wildlife eating your produce and act accordingly. When your fruits and vegetables are ready to pick, you'll see them immediately, so you can enjoy them at their freshest. If these same plants grow along the ground, you may miss your first harvest under the shadowy leaves. Supporting the plants as they grow upright means your upkeep will be less overwhelming when they're huge at the end of summer.

When do I fertilize my veggie plants?

After you've planted your flowers or plants, ensure they're hydrated and well-fed. Choose a synthetic or an organic fertilizer that fits your needs and give your garden a boost. You can even find one that's formulated for whatever you're growing, whether you need a shrub fertilizer, fruit tree fertilizer, or a garden fertilizer blend. Only apply as often as directed on the packaging. More is not better here. Be sure to water immediately after, as directed, so the fertilizer won't burn the plants.

Can I make shady places to stay cool in the summer?

When you need a break from working in the yard, shelter beneath a patio umbrella or covered gazebo. Attach awnings and sun sails to the shed or house for shady spots. However, sometimes shade isn't enough because it's extremely humid out. That's when a patio mister or misting fan can help cool the air and transform a stifling afternoon into a relaxing day. Go back to lounging in the sun when that water-cooled air is ready.

How can I do a quick backyard makeover?

Spending time with friends in gorgeous weather makes the season even more special. But you don't need a full patio makeover or to create your own patio furniture collection from scratch to do it. Even a minor backyard refresh can make a big difference. New outdoor lounge furniture, outdoor string lights, or even an outdoor rug can add character to a patio.

As the calendar turns to summer, your landscaping and garden will weather more intense heat and UV rays than earlier in the year. That means you'll want to consider how to keep things cool with shade and irrigation. You might also need ways to beat the heat. Let us help. At The Home Depot Tool Garden Center in Raleigh, we've got what you need to make the most of summer.

Keep Your Garden Tidy
As the weeks tick by, the grass or sod you planted will grow taller than what's ideal. You'll need to maintain it so it can look fresh again. Keep the lawn in check with a self-propelled lawn mower and a string trimmer to knock down any tall grass around fences, sidewalks, or buildings.

Bushes, trees, and shrubs climb toward the sun and lose their shape over time. In the summer, they'll be growing fast, filled with buds and blooms before you know it. Prune them a more manicured state with garden shears and hedge trimmers. It's best to leave major tree maintenance and tree topping to the pros, but you may want to use a pole saw for minor trims and a chainsaw to shape bushes and small trees.

Watch Your Garden Thrive
Water your garden to keep it going between rainstorms. A general rule when watering plants is to aim the water at the roots. A garden hose, sprinkler or sprinkler system, or drip irrigation system will do the job. Contrary to popular belief, the blooms themselves don't need to be watered or even misted. Many flowers droop when but recover once they dry off. Succulents are an exception to basic watering rules, so look up your specific types of succulents to optimize their care.

In addition to watering them regularly, monitor the nutrients your plants are getting. Add fertilizer as recommended. We've even got fertilizers to match the plants you're growing so they'll enjoy a balanced diet with the correct nutrients.

Vertical Edible Gardening
If you like to grow your own food, take it vertical and consider growing organically. Many vegetable plants are vines and well-suited to climb a trellis or fence, so plant them next to one. The key to success is supporting the stem, fruit, and branches. This is so the weight of the plant doesn't snap the stem or branches.

Fasten the plant to a fence, trellis, or pole with string, plant ties and wires, garden wire, or fabric strips. Be sure to attach each plant loosely. Then the stem has room to grow wider and the branches and leaves can sway in the breeze. Strawberry, cantaloupe, squash, cucumber, and tomato plants need support as they bear fruit. Squash and melons require hammocks made of string, old nylons, a sling, or other stretchy fabric to support the heavy produce. These plants take up less space on the ground this way, which allows you to fit even more plants or have walking room in between.

Vines as Decorative Shade
Plant vines near an arbor or trellis so they'll climb it and give you both shade and beauty. Go with native vine plants to attract bees and other pollinators. Grape vines are a classic choice, but they take time to mature, so you'll enjoy dappled shade but no grapes for a few years. Remember to match your vine plants to how much sunlight you receive, as not all of them thrive in full sun. As a bonus, many vines put out sweet-smelling flowers, so you can enjoy a delightful fragrance in the cool shade.
