Ensure your
garage doors are working efficiently by maintaining, repairing and replacing some of their key parts when necessary. Garage door parts can range from rollers to springs and hinges to seals and are essential to your garage door’s proper functioning.
Common Garage Door Parts
Hinges: This garage door part attaches the door’s frame to the wall. Poorly maintained or broken hinges can even prevent your garage door from opening.
Garage door hinges come in sizes that are labeled numerically for easy identification, so take note of which number is imprinted on yours before purchasing replacements.
Garage door rollers: These ball bearings in the door’s rails are some of the most crucial garage door parts. Replace your rollers when they start making excessive noise, or when your garage door isn’t opening smoothly. To determine what size replacement rollers you need, measure the width of the roller head and length of the attached shaft or stem.
Garage door springs: Springs act as a counterbalance to the weight of the door, and stretch or torque to provide enough force to move the door. There are three types of springs: extension springs, torsion springs and EZ-set torsion springs. Your garage door might need new springs if its alignment is off or if you raise the door halfway and it can’t stay up on its own.
Garage door seals: These seals mount to your garage door and create a tight barrier to prevent leaves, dirt, water and snow from being blown under the garage door by the wind. The door seal will also help keep out unwanted insects and snakes. Adding a seal will keep your garage warmer during the winter and cooler during the summer, helping keep your energy costs down. Garage door seals work with all types of garage doors including roll up doors, hinged wood doors and walk through doors.
