ringing the bell, the detector will sound the doorbell and will show you by lighting the motion detector icon on the bell box. The same with the door detector. If anyone should open the door, the doorbell will ring and the door detector icon will light on the bell box. The motion detector can be set to operate during the daytime only or both day and night by selecting the setting on a switch. The only problem is if you want to change the setting, the switch is located behind the battery inside the motion detector, which you have mounted on the wall. You'll have to climb up to where the detector is hung, unscrew the battery box, and take out the battery to get to the switch. Also, the mounting screws provided strip easily. Other than those two quirks, it's a handy gadget.
