    Great product! Easy to install
After review numerous options I settled for the Generac 16kw. Great product and well built! Made in the USA! It was very easy to install and just as easy to use. Operation is effortless! Basically it's off, manual, or Auto operation! Well thought out for oil changes and maintenance!

I read sveral reviews on this product and that is what influenced me to go with this unit. Now when I'm away I have peace opf mind if we should loose power.

    16KW rock solid
I have had this 16KW generator for over 5 years. Hurricane Ike blew through Ohio just after install. No power for 3 days ran very well. I had other outages lasting over a week long and still no problems. It is an easy install if you are handy with gas and electricity. You need friends to move it to the pad.

    Works well
Seems well built and works perfectly. Only time will tell how it holds up in the weather here in NY. The installing electrician was happy with the support line, 'tho there were long waits.

    GREAT UNIT!
My wife and I purchased this unit for our home in the mountains in San Bernardino, CA. We have had the unit since January, 2011. I have MS and I am disabled, we have chair lifts in our home and God forbid I need to be on a ventilator it would save me. The unit self test for 20 minutes every Saturday. It is quiet and really is white noise. We have had several power outages in the past year the longest lasting 5 hours in the middle of February in a huge, cold, snow storm. The generator kicked on ... read more right away and ran our whole house with no problems. It runs on natural gas so with natural gas you only get 18000 W but more then enough to run everything in our house and then sum. If you have the means and the need I highly recommend this unit!!

GE Generator and tech support can't be beat
Great product, support, and pricing. This shipment was damaged by trucking company.

Product was what we wanted and are happy with what we got.
I researched quite a few different models of generators and found that this one offered through Home Depot was the best one for us. I am looking forward to having it connected and prepared for back up as the winter starts in full swing.

    GE 15kW - 1, Derecho 2012 - 0
I purchased this unit last year October 2011. The winter of 2011/2012 was very mild and we didn’t need it, but then came the “derecho” of 2012. With millions homes without power because of the storm, I felt great about the purchase my family made as we are enjoying our standby generator during this outage as our generator kicked in without issue. We would were without power for almost 5 days, but we were nice and cool as our generator ran our complete home, air conditioning and all. With local ... read more regulations, you need to have your unit 5 feet away from your house, so the doors all around isn't a problem. You want 360 degree access. I highly recommend this unit.

Good unit, fair price, documentation needs a little work
Everything worked great - took a while to wire and setup propane - but that was to be expected. When I ran test, I kept keep a fault code 8; called tech support and they had me set two dip switches that were not set - wish the doci had that bit of info. Outside of that the unit looks great and works great! Only Gripe is that Home Depot told me that it did NOT come with a pad. I bought a pad and the unit showed up with a pad.

    Excellent back-up power
We just lost power in the DC area and it ran our central AC and half our house for 45 hours straight. It worked great! (We installed it 2 years ago, so it holds up). Installation is very complicated so you need a good electrician with generator experience.

    A WONDERFUL PRODUCT
The first thing to know is that you will need an electrical and plumbing permit from your town. Some towns actually require that you provide a property survey before the permit is issued because they want to see the proposed location. In my town, the generator had to be at least 5 feet from any property line. Luckily, I had an old survey kicking around from 15 years ago which the town accepted. I put an "X" on the proposed location and waited two weeks for approval. My Kohler 12RESL arrived by ... read more truck delivery right on time and the driver wheeled the unit to the end of my driveway. I hired a certified Kohler electrician to do the installation work, and they sent over fours guys who lifted the unit and walked it over to a gravel base that I put down the day before. I used about six bags of pea gravel to create the base. When the Kohler tech opened the box, he told me that I got a fantastic price on my 12RESL generator from Home Depot. He could not, as a dealer, match the price. You should know that model sold by Home Depot differs from the one you would get from your local Kohler Dealer in that the Home Depot model does not come equipped for internet based control. In other words, if you want to be able to control your generator while lying on beach in France, this is not the model for you. Since my budget would now allow for a higher priced unit anyhow - this one was perfect. While I considered the Generac models, I opted for this one because A) it was the top rated model when Consumer Reports tested generators in 2006; B) as an older model, the bugs have been worked out. c) The Kohler units are able to handle larger loads than comparable Generacs due to their ability to provide short term surges in power production when appliances are turned on. I would have had to move up to a 14 KW Generac model to handle my house. The Kohler 12RESL comes with a very nice 100 AMP transfer switch that allows for 12 circuits to be activated in a power outage. Even though my house has a 200 AMP main panel, it's no problem to connect the 100 AMP Kohler panel to the 200 amp main panel using a circuit breaker. I selected 12 circuits that will have my home up and running in an outage. Here's my list: 3 ton Central Air (this uses up 2 of the 12 circuits on the panel because it is a 220 volt application), Washer, Gas Dryer, Gas Range, three kitchen outlets, master bed and bathroom, room, Cable Service, Two TV's, and 2 Refrigerators, dishwasher, and lighting. Before you buy, look at your electrical panel and figure out which circuits you would select. If you absolutely need more than 12 circuits, this is not the generator / transfer switch combination for you. One of the nice features of the transfer switch is that it allows the electrician to set the central Air unit to come one 5 minutes after everything else. This is a great feature because it prevents the generator from having to deal the extraordinary load caused by starting everything at once. The 12RESL is housed in an insulated steel box and it is very quiet when running. As a matter of fact, my wife and I were absolutely shocked by how little noise is produced by this unit. After installation, we tested the unit by shutting off the main breaker. The Kohler started up and we had quiet power in about 8 seconds. While testing the generator, it ran my central air while running two refrigerators, and dehumidifier, lighting and a TV. At my electrician's recommendation, I switched out all of our old fashioned light bulbs for Compact florescent and LED bulbs. I should have done this a long time ago to save electricity, but now it's doubly important. Less wattage consumed by lighting means more generator power for everything else. Here's an important tip: The Kohler transfer switch that comes with this unit does not feature the newest technology called "power shedding." With power shedding, a small computer inside the transfer switch always monitors the load and will automatically shut down circuits that you designate as being less important if too much electricity is being used in the home. If too much of a load is demanded of my unit, the main circuit breaker will trip and the whole house would go dark. We would then shut off a high demand appliance and reset the breaker. The new power shedding technology is great, and Home Depot offers it with some of the Generac units that they sell - at a very good price. If you have a tight budget, you'll have to decide whether you want to place the emphasis on getting a better generator (Kohler) or a more sophisticated transfer switch (Generac). Note that not all of the Generacs come with the power shedding switch. Be careful to read the Home Depot package deal descriptions very carefully. Both the Generac and Kohler units require an oil change after 100 hours (4 days) of continuous operation. If you think you might have an outage longer than that, buy some motor oil and learn how to do an oil change. Based upon my research, the best oil for these units 10W-30 Synthetic Mobil 1 Extended Performance. Whether you buy the Kohler or the Generac, you should buy the optional carburator heater if you live in a place where temperatures can drop below 32 F. If you buy this particular Kohler unit, you need Kohler heater Model GM39564-KP1. Do not buy the Kohler carb heater sold by Home Depot because it will NOT fit the 12RESL model. The Home Depot web site says it will fit, but it won't. You can read my heater review for more details.

    Kohler whole house generator/14KW
The power has not been off yet.I think it will be nice to not have to hook up a generator to have electric power.

True peace of mind and a great value
I had one of these units on my home in Southeast Texas during an extended outage caused by a hurricane. The system performed flawlessly for days on end. It was so nice to have air conditioning, be able to wash and dry clothes, and not have the inconvenience and waste of spoiled food in the refrigerator and deep freeze. The generator required very little interaction during the extended run time except for the addition of oil, which we expected. I can't say enough good things about Generac or their products!

    easy to install
I have never installed a standby generator before, the instructions were easy to understand. My gas line is on one side and my electrical panel is on the other side of the house, So run gas line around or electrical line around, I ran the electrical line around. The transfer switch was very easy to install, the instructions made it very clear. Setting the unit up was very easy with step by step instructions on the panel. the system works flawless. 15 sec. after the power is out, power is back on ... read more again. I will never own a house without a standby generator again.

This is our second one - great generator!!
We recently moved into a new home and purchased this 20KW Generac. After installation the electrician threw the power to the house and the generator automatically transferred power with natural gas. We haven't had a power outage since it was installed but it is a great peace of mind knowing that our home can still function as usual during an outage. It automatically runs an exercise every week. We don't notice the noise when we are inside. We knew that we wanted this brand because our old home ... read more had the 17KW which never failed us. Found the best pricing at Home Depot.

Important Question-Snow build-up around unit: How do you keep it away?
Just got this unit installed three months ago and has already been in action twice during power failures. But I'm wondering how you keep snow away from the air intake unit if it should snow greater than a foot or so? I live in Vermont and if I'm away for more than a day and it could really snow, what kind of structure can you build around the unit...so that the unit can "breathe" and deadly gases don't develop? It should be a big problem but no one seems to have an answer.

    service/functions
i am on oxygen 24/7. in the past, i had to find my way down cellar to get on a different oxygen delivery system if i had a power failure. my neighbor had to take care of my gas generator as i am unable to do it. this wonderful generator has given me immeasureable peace of mind and being able to detect what is wrong from inside the house is awesome. philbrick's generators out of stratham, nh is my dealer and i could not ask for better service. all company of all types should take lessons from ... read more them as well as the team they have set up to install them from the electrician (s) to the fuel company. i am so pleased and happy. i will recommend this to anyone.

    Happy with Generator
Works well, needed warrantee work after one year which is very costly. Defective ground on engine generator and defective control board in electrical control panel. Dealer honored the engine repair, not the panel. Very expense and not a DY project.

You can use an outdoor transfer switch to flip the whole house and save
You can use a simple outdoor transfer switch only to flip the whole house at the main after the meter, about 1 to 2 hrs to install and save a lot of money and time because you don't need to use a new transfer switch combo breaker box. Just use your existing breaker box if it's up to code.

My installation was done by East Coast Generators & Bright Side Electric
The generator went through its first "self vest" last Friday & it worked as promised. Ordering it at Home Depot was very satisfying & it was delivered on time. No question, the Kohler generator is the way to go if you want a dependable unit.

    Kohler Generator KW 14RESAL Installed
Home Depot Customer Service Representative was very helpful on the phone during ordering process. Clearly explained the features and benefits of this unit. Suggested the addition of the carburetor heater unit for northern Michigan use. Ordered on 4/10 and delivered 4/15/ - way ahead of schedule. Local electrician and local plumber installed the unit without incident and unit functioned correctly during the first attempt to start. Total cost including local installation was much less than quoted ... read more by a 'local' distributor for alternative product from another manufacturer. Using Natural Gas the unit is on automatic weekly sequence to start, check systems, and shut down. Noise/sound is relatively quiet for our residential neighborhood. I could not hear it half a block away. Only issue is lack of screening for insects, wasps, rodents that may want to live inside the containment unit. Value will be determined the first time we have to rely on the unit for back-up electricity for any time. The installation and purchase of the equipment is considerably less than anticipated.
