    Great Product ,Poor Installs
I am a certified Generac Tech, although the generator is Rated to be 18" from a noncombustible surface and some of the pictures I see are not correct installs. code for Generator installs are 5ft from any opening be it a window or a dryer Vent for reasons of safety from carbon monoxide poisoning from the fumes . please refer to local codes when installing and get a Generac maintenance contract to insure many years of reliable stanby Power

True peace of mind and a great value
I had one of these units on my home in Southeast Texas during an extended outage caused by a hurricane. The system performed flawlessly for days on end. It was so nice to have air conditioning, be able to wash and dry clothes, and not have the inconvenience and waste of spoiled food in the refrigerator and deep freeze. The generator required very little interaction during the extended run time except for the addition of oil, which we expected. I can't say enough good things about Generac or their products!

    Nothing to complain about...
Delivered in a timely manner (10 days) though I believe I was expecting it in around seven. I found through multiple estimates that it is cheaper to buy the unit yourself and then have it installed rather than get it through a thrid party. I finally had it installed for about $1900 which was far less than any other estimate I had been given. Unit works well... I had 2 small problems with the install but I am very happy with the product. Now I can count on the power not going out for at least a few years.

Installed 4 years ago and works very well
I live in a bedroom community north of Boston. Its been 4 years since installation and very few problems have occurred. I have it operating on natural gas which is the best option since it is less likely to be effected by stormy weather. The transfer switch works flawlessly. I hardly know when it switches from utility power to generator and back. is relatively quiet since I have installed it out back about 6 feet away from the house. The exercise cycle also works well and only a few minor faults ... read more have occurred. These were readily corrected with the help of your excellent phone support. It's also interesting to note that since I have installed this unit, we have not had a power failure for more than a few minutes at a time, so I don't know how well it will perform over an extended period.

    Life Saver
I purchased this G.E. backup generator because I have a daughter that has a need for refrigerated medication. If power goes out, her health cannot be jeopardized. This system gives the family peace of mind, and is a life saver when needed. It has performed flawlessly from the beginning and the small footprint is wonderful.

Important Question-Snow build-up around unit: How do you keep it away?
Just got this unit installed three months ago and has already been in action twice during power failures. But I'm wondering how you keep snow away from the air intake unit if it should snow greater than a foot or so? I live in Vermont and if I'm away for more than a day and it could really snow, what kind of structure can you build around the unit...so that the unit can "breathe" and deadly gases don't develop? It should be a big problem but no one seems to have an answer.

    Good product
We have been wanting to install one for a long time. We are ready for the storms! The installers were super sweet and it didn't take them no time to install. They did not leave till they made sure everything was working. Hopefully we won't have to use the generator anytime soon but if we do we are ready!

The generator has given me great peace of mind!
The installation and maintenance of my Generac generator have been superb. Installation was done efficiently and quickly while testing it and making sure it was operating correctly. I was surprised when, 6 months after installation, a man showed up to service it. I get a weekly email that the machine is running a test. What more security could you want? The dealer gave me the best, detailed estimate I've ever had (and I did have one before settling on your service). There were no surprises and I ... read more couldn't be more satisfied! Thank you all!!

    Best move I ever made
I use to use a 8 K welder generator to keep power running in the house but I had to be home to connect it. I travel all the time not fun getting the phone call from Mrs. I connect this up and could not believe how well the switch and generator reacted to an outage, and how it handled the load. I highly recommend this generator and switch.

    A WONDERFUL PRODUCT
The first thing to know is that you will need an electrical and plumbing permit from your town. Some towns actually require that you provide a property survey before the permit is issued because they want to see the proposed location. In my town, the generator had to be at least 5 feet from any property line. Luckily, I had an old survey kicking around from 15 years ago which the town accepted. I put an "X" on the proposed location and waited two weeks for approval. My Kohler 12RESL arrived by ... read more truck delivery right on time and the driver wheeled the unit to the end of my driveway. I hired a certified Kohler electrician to do the installation work, and they sent over fours guys who lifted the unit and walked it over to a gravel base that I put down the day before. I used about six bags of pea gravel to create the base. When the Kohler tech opened the box, he told me that I got a fantastic price on my 12RESL generator from Home Depot. He could not, as a dealer, match the price. You should know that model sold by Home Depot differs from the one you would get from your local Kohler Dealer in that the Home Depot model does not come equipped for internet based control. In other words, if you want to be able to control your generator while lying on beach in France, this is not the model for you. Since my budget would now allow for a higher priced unit anyhow - this one was perfect. While I considered the Generac models, I opted for this one because A) it was the top rated model when Consumer Reports tested generators in 2006; B) as an older model, the bugs have been worked out. c) The Kohler units are able to handle larger loads than comparable Generacs due to their ability to provide short term surges in power production when appliances are turned on. I would have had to move up to a 14 KW Generac model to handle my house. The Kohler 12RESL comes with a very nice 100 AMP transfer switch that allows for 12 circuits to be activated in a power outage. Even though my house has a 200 AMP main panel, it's no problem to connect the 100 AMP Kohler panel to the 200 amp main panel using a circuit breaker. I selected 12 circuits that will have my home up and running in an outage. Here's my list: 3 ton Central Air (this uses up 2 of the 12 circuits on the panel because it is a 220 volt application), Washer, Gas Dryer, Gas Range, three kitchen outlets, master bed and bathroom, room, Cable Service, Two TV's, and 2 Refrigerators, dishwasher, and lighting. Before you buy, look at your electrical panel and figure out which circuits you would select. If you absolutely need more than 12 circuits, this is not the generator / transfer switch combination for you. One of the nice features of the transfer switch is that it allows the electrician to set the central Air unit to come one 5 minutes after everything else. This is a great feature because it prevents the generator from having to deal the extraordinary load caused by starting everything at once. The 12RESL is housed in an insulated steel box and it is very quiet when running. As a matter of fact, my wife and I were absolutely shocked by how little noise is produced by this unit. After installation, we tested the unit by shutting off the main breaker. The Kohler started up and we had quiet power in about 8 seconds. While testing the generator, it ran my central air while running two refrigerators, and dehumidifier, lighting and a TV. At my electrician's recommendation, I switched out all of our old fashioned light bulbs for Compact florescent and LED bulbs. I should have done this a long time ago to save electricity, but now it's doubly important. Less wattage consumed by lighting means more generator power for everything else. Here's an important tip: The Kohler transfer switch that comes with this unit does not feature the newest technology called "power shedding." With power shedding, a small computer inside the transfer switch always monitors the load and will automatically shut down circuits that you designate as being less important if too much electricity is being used in the home. If too much of a load is demanded of my unit, the main circuit breaker will trip and the whole house would go dark. We would then shut off a high demand appliance and reset the breaker. The new power shedding technology is great, and Home Depot offers it with some of the Generac units that they sell - at a very good price. If you have a tight budget, you'll have to decide whether you want to place the emphasis on getting a better generator (Kohler) or a more sophisticated transfer switch (Generac). Note that not all of the Generacs come with the power shedding switch. Be careful to read the Home Depot package deal descriptions very carefully. Both the Generac and Kohler units require an oil change after 100 hours (4 days) of continuous operation. If you think you might have an outage longer than that, buy some motor oil and learn how to do an oil change. Based upon my research, the best oil for these units 10W-30 Synthetic Mobil 1 Extended Performance. Whether you buy the Kohler or the Generac, you should buy the optional carburator heater if you live in a place where temperatures can drop below 32 F. If you buy this particular Kohler unit, you need Kohler heater Model GM39564-KP1. Do not buy the Kohler carb heater sold by Home Depot because it will NOT fit the 12RESL model. The Home Depot web site says it will fit, but it won't. You can read my heater review for more details.

    Best investment!
I bought this unit from Home Depot online and have used my 12KW for over 3 yrs. I smile ear-to-ear each time the power goes out! We lose power often, and once for almost three days in 10 degree weather. I was fed up and decided to make the plunge and buy the Kohler. It has operated flawlessly. I have no regrets and would do it all over again. My wife loves it too!

    Excellent back-up power
We just lost power in the DC area and it ran our central AC and half our house for 45 hours straight. It worked great! (We installed it 2 years ago, so it holds up). Installation is very complicated so you need a good electrician with generator experience.

Great purchase at a good price
Had generator installed by a professional. Although we hope we never have to use this it gives us great peace of mind. On initial start-up we turned on 2 whole house air conditioners, washer, dryer, oven (on broil), toaster oven, 2 TV's, and numerous lights. The Generac was able to handle the load with power to spare. On it's exercise cycle it runs for only 5 minutes and the sound level is less than a lawn mower.

Great product and awesome price. by the way, my house is almost 3000ft2 concrete. its a big house....

    GE 15kW - 1, Derecho 2012 - 0
I purchased this unit last year October 2011. The winter of 2011/2012 was very mild and we didn’t need it, but then came the “derecho” of 2012. With millions homes without power because of the storm, I felt great about the purchase my family made as we are enjoying our standby generator during this outage as our generator kicked in without issue. We would were without power for almost 5 days, but we were nice and cool as our generator ran our complete home, air conditioning and all. With local ... read more regulations, you need to have your unit 5 feet away from your house, so the doors all around isn't a problem. You want 360 degree access. I highly recommend this unit.

Good unit, fair price, documentation needs a little work
Everything worked great - took a while to wire and setup propane - but that was to be expected. When I ran test, I kept keep a fault code 8; called tech support and they had me set two dip switches that were not set - wish the doci had that bit of info. Outside of that the unit looks great and works great! Only Gripe is that Home Depot told me that it did NOT come with a pad. I bought a pad and the unit showed up with a pad.

Product was what we wanted and are happy with what we got.
I researched quite a few different models of generators and found that this one offered through Home Depot was the best one for us. I am looking forward to having it connected and prepared for back up as the winter starts in full swing.

Valuable purchase & peace of mind
I'm a 70+ female on oxygen 24/7 and VERY concerned about power outages with my dependency on my oxygen converter. I purchased the whole house generator and when my power goes out, I knoiw to count to three and have it come back on, switching to my home's natural gas supply. It's unbelieveable how much I love and depend upon my Generac equipment. Even my son, who lives a 2-hour drive from me, can rest knowing I'm not without power and am in good hands. Thanks!

    Excellent peace of mind
I just had this generator installed. We live in the country In Iowa and have a gas furnace and well for water. The winters here can be brutal. I can't begin to tell you how much peace of mind this equipment provides. I can rest easy now when I am out of town and not worry that my wife has any concerns with heat, water, the security system or anything else that is dependent on electricity. The system is awesome. It checks itself on a weekly basis and is very simple to maintain. This is probably ... read more the best investment I have made for our home.

20 KW runs the whole house
We had the 20 KW unit installed in May 2014. It performs the weekly self test/run every week without fail. In addition I flip the main breaker maybe a couple times each month and the unit kicks in and runs the whole house. Last year during the summer a tornado/high wind event came through the area and the power went out for three hours but the Generac came on and ran two air conditioners, pool pump, pool heat pump, refrigerator and TV for three hours no problem. It eased the anxiety associated ... read more with the event. It worked just as well through the cold New England winter, starting and running with the cold weather battery warmer option.

    Remains to be seen
This GE generator is a branded Briggs & Stratton unit with a better warranty. All customer support, technical support & warranty is done thru them, with GE providing none. That said, I have no problems with that. My issue is when purchasing from the Depot as they are not a listed service or warranty provider for this GE unit, it is up to you to find a dealer when required. Installation was pretty straight forward, with me hiring a licensed plumber and electrician as required. So far we haven't ... read more had an outage so it just sits there....waiting. How well it will work, I have no idea but I'm hopeful as it tests fine. It has a 5 year parts & labor warranty on the generator side, 2 year on the motor. That is longer than most. Again....I'm not sure who will handle this as all the Briggs & Stratton dealers are independent and let's face it, they handle there own installations first. This generator also has load shedding modules for extra cost which are optional & so far I have not had them installed. In short, I'm not sorry that I acted as the contractor, because I saved some $$, but next time I would hire someone from GE's list of authorized service dealer network to do a complete job.

Have this installed by a certified installer
I have seen many reviews with people reporting some issues. I hired a pro that was factory certified and trained. It wasn't cheap, but I was enjoying life during Hurricane Sandy while my neighbors who hired "electricians" were annoyed that their generator wasn't working properly. My priority zones were great and I was protected from any issues with the smartest investment I made. As for the question about 5 ton air conditioner, my installer informed me that it is a known issue and my 5 ton AC ... read more worked fine on generator power. No issues whatsoever. Key is having the professionals installs this generator.
