    Nothing to complain about...
Delivered in a timely manner (10 days) though I believe I was expecting it in around seven. I found through multiple estimates that it is cheaper to buy the unit yourself and then have it installed rather than get it through a thrid party. I finally had it installed for about $1900 which was far less than any other estimate I had been given. Unit works well... I had 2 small problems with the install but I am very happy with the product. Now I can count on the power not going out for at least a few years.

    Great!
First time installing. Did not know what to expect. Wired transfer switch according to instructions, set generator on pad and followed start-up procedure. Wow, it ran perfectly. No adjustments were needed, 1 by 1 we added loads until all were on. Now when power goes off in 10 seconds generator starts and 5 seconds later our lights and critical circuits all come back. When utility power is restored, in 1 second power is transferred back and generator goes into a cool down period and shuts off ... read more awaiting next fail. Exceeded our expectations. We love it. Can't wait till next power failure. Mike - Blakeslee, PA

    easy to install
I have never installed a standby generator before, the instructions were easy to understand. My gas line is on one side and my electrical panel is on the other side of the house, So run gas line around or electrical line around, I ran the electrical line around. The transfer switch was very easy to install, the instructions made it very clear. Setting the unit up was very easy with step by step instructions on the panel. the system works flawless. 15 sec. after the power is out, power is back on ... read more again. I will never own a house without a standby generator again.

    Best move I ever made
I use to use a 8 K welder generator to keep power running in the house but I had to be home to connect it. I travel all the time not fun getting the phone call from Mrs. I connect this up and could not believe how well the switch and generator reacted to an outage, and how it handled the load. I highly recommend this generator and switch.

    Peace of mind
Our electricity has gone off several times throughout the year and for several days at a time. Finally, I feel secure with the Generac Generator. No more freezing or sweating, no more groceries thrown away, no more spending money on motels and my kids have a place to come now when they experience power outages.

    Wonderful Product
I had mine installed and what a true pleasure. The local electrician I had hired arrived on time and did a professional job as did the local plummer in hooking up the gas line. Starts every Saturday at 10:00am and runs for 10 minutes.

    Great investment
We purchased the 17k Generac generator for back up purposes. So far the machine has worked excellent and ran through its weekly maintenance check. This purchase will ease our mind when storms are being predicted.

Great backup House Generator proving itself during the storm.
We installed this unit a couple years ago to provide power during blackouts for an elderly person. It has been doing great since the install. It runs a backup test every week and I only have to check it every couple months. We only have 245 hrs on the clock and it has been great. This week we lost power after the summer storms came through. It has been running non-stop for days. At this point, it has become one of ths smartest purchases we have ever made. With the heat pushing 100 deg, there is ... read more no way we could keep going in the house without it. Thanks Generac!!

    A WONDERFUL PRODUCT
The first thing to know is that you will need an electrical and plumbing permit from your town. Some towns actually require that you provide a property survey before the permit is issued because they want to see the proposed location. In my town, the generator had to be at least 5 feet from any property line. Luckily, I had an old survey kicking around from 15 years ago which the town accepted. I put an "X" on the proposed location and waited two weeks for approval. My Kohler 12RESL arrived by ... read more truck delivery right on time and the driver wheeled the unit to the end of my driveway. I hired a certified Kohler electrician to do the installation work, and they sent over fours guys who lifted the unit and walked it over to a gravel base that I put down the day before. I used about six bags of pea gravel to create the base. When the Kohler tech opened the box, he told me that I got a fantastic price on my 12RESL generator from Home Depot. He could not, as a dealer, match the price. You should know that model sold by Home Depot differs from the one you would get from your local Kohler Dealer in that the Home Depot model does not come equipped for internet based control. In other words, if you want to be able to control your generator while lying on beach in France, this is not the model for you. Since my budget would now allow for a higher priced unit anyhow - this one was perfect. While I considered the Generac models, I opted for this one because A) it was the top rated model when Consumer Reports tested generators in 2006; B) as an older model, the bugs have been worked out. c) The Kohler units are able to handle larger loads than comparable Generacs due to their ability to provide short term surges in power production when appliances are turned on. I would have had to move up to a 14 KW Generac model to handle my house. The Kohler 12RESL comes with a very nice 100 AMP transfer switch that allows for 12 circuits to be activated in a power outage. Even though my house has a 200 AMP main panel, it's no problem to connect the 100 AMP Kohler panel to the 200 amp main panel using a circuit breaker. I selected 12 circuits that will have my home up and running in an outage. Here's my list: 3 ton Central Air (this uses up 2 of the 12 circuits on the panel because it is a 220 volt application), Washer, Gas Dryer, Gas Range, three kitchen outlets, master bed and bathroom, room, Cable Service, Two TV's, and 2 Refrigerators, dishwasher, and lighting. Before you buy, look at your electrical panel and figure out which circuits you would select. If you absolutely need more than 12 circuits, this is not the generator / transfer switch combination for you. One of the nice features of the transfer switch is that it allows the electrician to set the central Air unit to come one 5 minutes after everything else. This is a great feature because it prevents the generator from having to deal the extraordinary load caused by starting everything at once. The 12RESL is housed in an insulated steel box and it is very quiet when running. As a matter of fact, my wife and I were absolutely shocked by how little noise is produced by this unit. After installation, we tested the unit by shutting off the main breaker. The Kohler started up and we had quiet power in about 8 seconds. While testing the generator, it ran my central air while running two refrigerators, and dehumidifier, lighting and a TV. At my electrician's recommendation, I switched out all of our old fashioned light bulbs for Compact florescent and LED bulbs. I should have done this a long time ago to save electricity, but now it's doubly important. Less wattage consumed by lighting means more generator power for everything else. Here's an important tip: The Kohler transfer switch that comes with this unit does not feature the newest technology called "power shedding." With power shedding, a small computer inside the transfer switch always monitors the load and will automatically shut down circuits that you designate as being less important if too much electricity is being used in the home. If too much of a load is demanded of my unit, the main circuit breaker will trip and the whole house would go dark. We would then shut off a high demand appliance and reset the breaker. The new power shedding technology is great, and Home Depot offers it with some of the Generac units that they sell - at a very good price. If you have a tight budget, you'll have to decide whether you want to place the emphasis on getting a better generator (Kohler) or a more sophisticated transfer switch (Generac). Note that not all of the Generacs come with the power shedding switch. Be careful to read the Home Depot package deal descriptions very carefully. Both the Generac and Kohler units require an oil change after 100 hours (4 days) of continuous operation. If you think you might have an outage longer than that, buy some motor oil and learn how to do an oil change. Based upon my research, the best oil for these units 10W-30 Synthetic Mobil 1 Extended Performance. Whether you buy the Kohler or the Generac, you should buy the optional carburator heater if you live in a place where temperatures can drop below 32 F. If you buy this particular Kohler unit, you need Kohler heater Model GM39564-KP1. Do not buy the Kohler carb heater sold by Home Depot because it will NOT fit the 12RESL model. The Home Depot web site says it will fit, but it won't. You can read my heater review for more details.

    Best investment!
I bought this unit from Home Depot online and have used my 12KW for over 3 yrs. I smile ear-to-ear each time the power goes out! We lose power often, and once for almost three days in 10 degree weather. I was fed up and decided to make the plunge and buy the Kohler. It has operated flawlessly. I have no regrets and would do it all over again. My wife loves it too!

    So far so good
I hired an electrician to install the generator due to permit and inspection requirements. He chose to install with 100 amp service, which added some cost and time to doing the work, due to large wire size. Overall the installation was straight forward and everything went fine. I already had a breaker panel set up for a generator, so did not use Square D buss in transfer switch cabinet. Unit started immediately (Nat Gas) on the first try, and we gave it three more tries by manually killing the ... read more power company feed, and each time the unit started and transferred the load successfully. First outage will be the next test.

You can use an outdoor transfer switch to flip the whole house and save
You can use a simple outdoor transfer switch only to flip the whole house at the main after the meter, about 1 to 2 hrs to install and save a lot of money and time because you don't need to use a new transfer switch combo breaker box. Just use your existing breaker box if it's up to code.

    good product
good product but the battery that I bought separately did not fit into the cover. Kohler should specify the type and size of battery required for each model.

Valuable purchase & peace of mind
I'm a 70+ female on oxygen 24/7 and VERY concerned about power outages with my dependency on my oxygen converter. I purchased the whole house generator and when my power goes out, I knoiw to count to three and have it come back on, switching to my home's natural gas supply. It's unbelieveable how much I love and depend upon my Generac equipment. Even my son, who lives a 2-hour drive from me, can rest knowing I'm not without power and am in good hands. Thanks!

20 KW runs the whole house
We had the 20 KW unit installed in May 2014. It performs the weekly self test/run every week without fail. In addition I flip the main breaker maybe a couple times each month and the unit kicks in and runs the whole house. Last year during the summer a tornado/high wind event came through the area and the power went out for three hours but the Generac came on and ran two air conditioners, pool pump, pool heat pump, refrigerator and TV for three hours no problem. It eased the anxiety associated ... read more with the event. It worked just as well through the cold New England winter, starting and running with the cold weather battery warmer option.

    Life Saver
I purchased this G.E. backup generator because I have a daughter that has a need for refrigerated medication. If power goes out, her health cannot be jeopardized. This system gives the family peace of mind, and is a life saver when needed. It has performed flawlessly from the beginning and the small footprint is wonderful.

    Happy with Generator
Works well, needed warrantee work after one year which is very costly. Defective ground on engine generator and defective control board in electrical control panel. Dealer honored the engine repair, not the panel. Very expense and not a DY project.

So far great easy to install doesn't include and wiring like Genarac does so cast me an extra 500$ for all the wiring

    Great value and High quality
We needed a reliable electric source for the winter months while we are on the road. After the ice storm of 1998 we were reluctant to travel. The Kohler name and the Home Depot’s great price were too hard to pass up. Installation was easy enough and the final connections were done by licensed contractors. The transfer switch works in less than 10 seconds so the power is only out briefly.
