At first, thought I had a lemon
Had this professionally installed by a local company, they did a great job with that, but it kept tripping breakers. After talking with Rheem they said we had a bad thermostat, so that got replaced, still the same issue, further troubleshooting determined that it was the wiring at my breaker box that was at fault.

have reacted much sooner to get it taken care of, that smell was stuff burning and scorching, but it smelled like a dead animal! This could have resulted in a fire. Putting in a higher capacity unit than the old hot water tank triggered the issues with electrical panel, but ultimately it was old age and bad wiring installation.
The electrician pulled out a couple of burned up fuses and some bad wires from our breaker box and now the hot water tank operates like a champ. The electrician was happy with the energy draw from the hot water tank and noted that it would be economical to run.
