Craft Board for an Advent Calendar or Star Card Holder

Holiday Craft BoardRead this guide to create a holiday project – a Holiday Advent Calendar or Star Card Holder – using a single board as your starting point. Whichever project you choose, you’ll see that they are both easy and festive. Here’s how to get started. Download a PDF version of this project.

Step 1: Cut the wood

For each board, you’ll want three 20-inch pieces and one 30-inch piece. Start by precisely measuring the boards and then use the circular saw to cut along the guides. You’ll want to measure and cut each piece one at a time as the circular saw takes about 1/8-inch off of the wood. Your measurements will be slightly off if each cut is not done separately.

Step 2: Paint or stain the lumber

Paint your lumber any color to match your holiday theme, or stain it for a rich look. The six 20-inch boards are the body of the board and the two 30-inch boards are the backing.

Step 3: Prepare the boards for assembly

Lay the six 20-inch boards on a flat surface horizontally with the back, unpainted side facing up. The boards should be straight and lined up. Now, measure and mark the guides for the back braces. Then measure 3 inches over from the left side of the bottom board and make a mark. Next, measure 1 1/2 inches from the bottom of the bottom board and make a mark. Do the same thing on the opposite side.

Step 4: Attach the backing boards

Now we’re ready to use our drill and pan head screws to attach the backing braces to the boards. Make sure to have at least one screw in each board.

Step 5: Attach the cleats

If you plan to hang this from a wall, the final step is to attach the French cleat to the braces. Do not attach to the horizontal boards, only the backing boards.

Step 6: Choose your finished project

Now that your board is ready, you can move on to the Holiday Advent Calendar or the Star Card Holder project.
