Four easy painting steps

Steps 1: Prepare your painting space

Spackle holes and cracks. Wipe down the walls to clean up flaking paint, oil, grease or dust. Prime with an appropriate Glidden Evermore primer.

Step 2: Use the right equipment

You can get most jobs accomplished with a 3/8" nap roller and a nylon or polyester brush.

Step 3: Start painting

Stir your paint thoroughly. Cut in a 3" or 4" border around doors, windows or the edge of the wall. Then use a roller to fill in walls with long strokes and a zigzig pattern to get an even coat.

Step 4: Clean up

Wash hands and tools with warm, soapy water. Get spills up by cleaning them with a damp rag immediately.

Painting the easy way

With a few tricks of the trade, you can make painting less of a chore and get professional results.

Tip 1

When painting a larger room, use a roller screen instead of a tray. Just pour a few gallons of paint into a 5-gallon bucket. The roller screen rids your roller of excess paint just like a roller tray. This will also reduce the amount of paint you waste.

Tip 2

When you're ready to take a break, seal your brushes in an airless plastic baggie and cover your roller and paint tray with plastic wrap. Refrigerate them until you're ready to work again.

Tip 3

Remember what color you've used in a room by taping paint chips to the back of a switch plate.

Paint your school's logo, made easy

Here's a helpful project if your artistic talent isn't on par with your school spirit. In five easy steps, we'll help you make a stencil of your school's mascot or logo.

Step 1

Print out a clear copy of the image you want.

Step 2

Tape the image to the back of acetate or plastic. Very carefully trace your image onto the acetate with the marker.

Step 3

Using your utility knife, cut out your image. Use a file to smooth down any rough edges.

Step 4

Spray the back of your stencil with the stencil adhesive. Then place your stencil where you want your design.

Step 5

Paint away, following the color copy of your image.
