Tools for Laying Tile Flooring

Tools for Laying Tile Flooring

Tile laying, like carpet laying, requires certain specialized tools; a more basic tool set for most home projects is shown on our separate pages, Basic Hand Tools and Basic Power Tools.

For filling in spaces near baseboards and around corners, some of your tiles will need to be cut. An abrasive stone file helps shape tiles to fit special configurations. Some tools are made of carbide, an especially hard material for cutting and penetrating hardened ceramic tile. Attaching a diamond drill bit to your power drill lets you make small holes in tile. A carbide rod saw makes intricate cuts in tile, and a carbide scoring tool is made especially for scoring backerboard. Use tile nippers to chip away small pieces of tile when cutting circular or unusual patterns. A wet saw makes quick work when you have lots of cuts to make. When you're finished cutting, a masonry stone removes rough or sharp edges.

Once your tiles are all cut and shaped, you'll want to begin laying and grouting them. Use a metal straightedge to keep tile courses straight. Fill a grout bag and use it for filling wide (more than one-half inch [1/2"]) joints and joints between rough tile. Different jobs require different trowels, and filling the joints properly calls for a grout float. To mix thinset mortar, use a heavy-duty drill with a mixing paddle attached. A margin trowel gets mortar into tight spaces and is a handy tool for scooping mortar from a bucket.

Cheese cloth removes stubborn grout residue. Use a rubber mallet and beater block to set tile in mortar without scratching or damaging the tile. A tile cutter scores and snaps tiles in straight lines to deal with unexpected shortages of space. Finally, you’ll need a sponge to clean the grout off the surface of the tiles.
