We love Home Depot as both a business owner and a residential customer. Below are a few things to think about to make it even better and more competitive;
Installation - You offer many different installation services. The only thing missing is deck installation.
Credit cards -I like that you offer different types of credit cards. I do think that you should offer more promotions though such as 0% introduction rates or 0% for purchases made during a certain period of time for say 12mths etc. This would drive more business for you during the seasons that people aren’t thinking about home improvements, such as during the holidays. It would be a on all parties.
Sales – I personally hate rebates but Menards does them all the time. Rather than the rebates why don’t you just price match Menards? The customer just needs to bring in the Menards rebate offer and you could match it on the spot. Lowes does price matching, often times apples to apples I really like them for that.
Sales people – What can I say about them except for that they are AWESomE!!! They are eager to help and are knowledgeable. They follow the rules are kind and professional in relaying them to the customer. There has been an occasion where I didn’t agree with the rules but after explaining to the sales clerk, they got management involved and we came to a reasonable resolution. It could be that we do tens of thousands of dollars worth of business with you guys though.
Ex. My elderly father was remodeling his home for sale. I was helping him. I told him to let me pick the finishes so without my knowledge he went to buy a few gallons of paint. The colors were totally outdated and would not have helped him sell his house. The policy for your store is “No returns on paint.” After explaining to the two sales clerks who were kind, I asked for the store manager. I explained that we had bought, new appliances, flooring and kitchen cabinets from Home Depot and all we are asking is that you help us out and take these paint colors back after being so loyal to Home Depot. The manager tried to sell the paint color, beige, to his employees, 5 gallons I think it was, to help us out. In the end, your Rochester MN 55901 store took the paint back and we got a new color. We sold the house in 3days with 5bids on the house. You helped us in that transaction, not only providing quality material but great service. I share that story all the time with people.
Large qty purchases – I must say that Lowes and Menards offer bigger discounts when you buy things in bulk often times less 30%. An area to look into perhaps.
All and all, I LOVE HOME DEPOT- Happy customer.
