Customer Questions & Answers

How many bags would I need to do an area 12' x 4' with a depth of 2 inches? I am going to be using the 12 x 12 Patio Stones.

It would be helpful if Home Depot had a calculator for this stuff on the website like they do for buying bags of mulch.

What is the bag weight

It is important to know this regarding pick-up or delivery ....It seem Home Depot should have the answer to this .....without having such a delay.....It is probably printed somewhere on the Bag......

A 0.5 cu ft bag of sand weights around 40 lbs, more or less.

Why not use 80-90lb concrete mix and pound it flat. It will cure from the normal ground moisture. Then add leveling sand prior to laying the pavers.

This would be much less costly and still provide adequate base for a patio or sidewalk.

You have to use gravel anywhere in the USA where freezing temperatures occur. Gravel allows water to drain, Concrete does not. consequently, the water will freeze and wreak havoc on your pavers. Using a few inches of gravel/stone, allows the water to drain into the soil, if the soil does freeze, it will uniformly lift the gravel, which will fill voids and take the brunt of the damage, saving your pavers.

0.5 cu. ft. Gray Paver Base is rated 2.6 out of 5 by 50.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from disappointed ! This product is very substandard and insanely expensive for basically being dirt in bag. I have attached a pic with the greyish base from the masonry supply on the right side of the black line which was like $33 a yard vs like $200 a yard in multiple bags from home depot. And more importantly the masonry supply base needed just 10 taps in each area and it settles solid like concrete. The one on the left of the black line which is more brownish in color is the home depot base which even after 20 taps in each area does not settle into solid base. It still feels a bit wobbly. I am gonna have to get some cement and mix in with that to get a solid base. What a waste of time and money. Please call your local masonry supply and get this thing delivered to your project area. You will save a ton of money and have a quality product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The large rocks it contains are critical! The larger size rocks this stuff contains are needed to add "beef" to your base material and without them, all you have is large size sand and you end up with nothing. The sand isn't really sand but is fine crushed concrete that surrounds and sticks to the larger pieces to form a solid base. The guys who are giving this product a bad review because of the large size pieces don't have a clue what they are doing. I use 90% base (step 1) and just a little sand on top (1/4 inch or so). Then that baby is solid! Spray it with water and this stuff hardens up like a brick. Super strong base for pavers or anything else that needs support.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked Great with Leveling Sand Had an area with no grass that we wanted to add a paver patio. I initially leveled the existing dirt and sand area out and watered the heck out of it for a week to ensure the existing material had compacted. I then added 2" of the Step 1 Paver Base and ran a plate compactor over it two times in each direction. I then added an additional 2" of the Step 1 Paver Base, and ran the plate compactor again over it twice, in both directions. It is really important that you ensure there are no high or low spots (I kept it under 1/4"). I then placed a stick of 1" PVC Pipe along one edge of the area, and another 8' away. I then added 1" of the Leveling Sand between the PVC, and then pulled a very straight 2x4 along the two pipes (called screeding) to create a smooth, level surface. I repeated this until the entire area had been completed. Was then just a matter of placing down the pavers, adding the border to keep everything secure, and swept some PermaSand in the joints, got it wet, and the patio looks incredible!

It was like working with clay instead of base material and makes pounding it out with the tamper an awful job and it sticks to the bottom of your tamper too. You then have to let it "set up" (for lack of better wording) because it squishes about under your feet when you walk on it. About 5 bags had large rounded river rocks in them which is not appropriate for base material. 1 bag was almost all river rock, very odd. I'm not sure the moisture was due to pavestone or home depot.

This time all of the bags contained large rocks up to 2 1/2" in diameter. There is no way you can hand compact rocks this size. Went to their competitor and their paver base looks and acts just like Home Depot's used to. Unless you are machine compacting the base, I would stay away from this product.
