The float is built into the mechanism, but it hangs off the side so that you can see it (make sure it isnt blocked) and also manually lift it to ensure that the sump pump is still working.

It has a warranty but the owners manual states that you have to replace the float and switch every 2 years and the stator every five. Failure to do so voids the warranty.

Home depot has independent contractors that work for them. If you ask a Home Depot rep for help, they'll guide you to a list of contractors you can work with.

Not sure. My assumption is that they do work with contractors that can perform this work. If you already have a water catching basin installed in the floor, installation is very simple. Place the pump on top of a level patio paver at the bottom of the basin. Install a 1-1/4" flex tube or PVC pipe, and run it to the outside. Answer:
This is a well-made pump, which will provide many years of service under normal circumstances, but it lacks a battery backup, so if you happen to lose power during a heavy rain storm, your basement can flood. As a backup to this sump pump, I'd recommend the Watchdog 1/3 hp battery back up system, or as an alternative, the Wayne 1/2 hp w/ battery backup, depending on your budget.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product slightly over priced Selection limited due to local flooding. Paid slightly more than average. Product works great and would buy again. January 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Pump This new pump replaced a Ridgid 1/2 HP Submersible Sump Pump that has been working at least 8 years in my basement. Good value for the money. April 25, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Motor got so hot water boiled This sump pump appears to be well built but failed in less than 3 years. I'm not sure what failed but the motor got so hot that it was boiling the water in the basin. At first I noticed the smell and than I noticed the steam coming out of the cover. There should be some fail self to prevent this from happening. I'm not sure what would have happened if I hadn't noticed. February 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great product This is my second one I purchased. I think it is an excellent product February 10, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Rusty components I had this pump for about 3.5 years. The pump worked great until the guide wire for the floater rusted out after less than a year and allowed the floater to get stuck causing a flooded basement. I replaced the wire with one I made using a rust resistant material from a local hardware store. That worked well but then the long screws that hold the pump together rusted out and the top part of the pump separated destroying it and resulting in another flooded basement. The pump works well but it's puzzling why a submersible pump would have critical components made out of rust susceptible materials. Rust resistant screws and wire can't possibly be that much more expensive to use. March 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Runs silent, runs deep. Great value for the power and water flow compared poorer performing alternatives. May 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Totally worth it! I came home from vacation to find the drains in my basement had a little bit of water coming up from them because my old sump pump was trying to kick on, but couldn't. Picked this up and installed it within an hour. A couple weeks later, the Detroit area was hit with the really heavy rainfall that flooded our expressways. Because I got out of work late and the roads were all flooded I couldn't even get home to check on my house. I feared that my basement had flooded like everybody I knew in the area. Next morning, I come home and find my basement bone dry. I was literally the ONLY house on the block that did not flood! While other sumps couldn't pump the water out fast enough, this one kept my basement floor bone dry! As a result, this little guy paid for itself ten fold! Since my sump is in a sealed pit, it's a little hard to take a picture of it in action so I included a picture of my basement floor, bone dry, the day after the massive flooding. I took a picture of it because I can't express to you how happy I was to see it. Great purchase! September 2, 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Rusty bolts, now does not work Like others mine lasted 5.5 years until a bolt rusted and down it went? Good thing mine was with the life time replacement, they are sending out a new one. After this one goes, then I am. on my own after 3 years. They changed the warenty to 3 yrs as most probably last around that long getting them off the hook. August 8, 2013
