Answer:
Klein step bits will easily drill into 1/8 in. mild steel. These bits can drill in to hardened or stainless steel; however, you may only be able to drill 1 or 2 holes. You can tell if it is mild/soft steel if you can create shavings with a file.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 3.0 out of 5 by 8 reviewers.
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Very disappointed Purchased this bit because I needed to drill a hole in a stainless steel sink. Very disappointed in how the drill performed. After drilling just one hole the drill bit became over dull. Subsequent holes have never been able to be drilled beyone 1 inch because the drill bit is dull. I have a small bit of another brand that has worked flawlessly for almost two years now. For the money and name this one should have performed better. August 5, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Junk About 6 holes drilled and it burnt out what a waste of money!! June 23, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Do not buy Worst step drill bit I've ever used! I burn out a battery trying to make a hole with this. If I didn't absolutely need it the day I bought it I would have returned it, now I'm stuck with it :/ May 2, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Step Bit Great step bit but you must be careful when using on metal as I used it to drill holes in stainless steel. You MUST be patient and drill slowly (low drill rpm) with several breaks to let the metal cool down. Otherwise, you might as well throw your money in the ocean because you will ruin the bit. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Cuts smoothly and quickly Nice product. Expensive for a drill bit, but well designed. Falls into the you get what you pay for category April 15, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Difficult to drill holes larger than 3/8" Due to the different geometry and dept of the grooves the tool rattles and the final hole does not come out round very easy. Compared to what I had used for more than 10 years this drill bit is junk. December 18, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Must have for electrical and sheet metal work. Saves time without changing drill bits. Stays in my tool box on every job. December 18, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by works great !!!!! WORKED GREAT FOR CUTTING HOLES IN MY 1933 FORD FIBERGLASS BODY . October 16, 2012
