I had no clue how to garden but decided this year was the year for me to learn. After researching many options and getting advice from expert gardeners, I went with this soil mix for my veggie bed. Better known as "Mel's Mix" on the blogs I follow, it has worked beautifully. My plants have taken off with very little effort on my part. I used a cheaper option for my pots, and most of them have died off. I highly recommend this! They do need to do something about the totally ridiculous shipping costs though. That makes no sense whatsoever, and it's unfortunate because I would've bought more of the shipping wasn't so high.

This was the only place I could find this soil for my square foot garden. And online was the only way to get it. $8.99/bag, a bargain (not to have to mix it myself). But was $10/bag delivery charge. Considering my back issues, I ordered 10 bags anyway. Please carry this item in your stores for heaven's sake! It's a wonderful product!

Excellent solution for people with mobility issues. This is replacing a trip to store and lifting heavy objects. It is of good quality and helped me with tomato and pepper plants.
In 50/50 mix with other soil mixes.

This barthalamew soil is a mixture of peat moss, vermiculite and holds moisture. It is everything that your garden needs to grow healthy vegetables. I planned a square yard garden and will find out how well the plants thrive over time.

This potting mix contains the 1/3 coarse vermiculite, 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 mixed compost recommended by Mel Bartholomew, in his Square Foot Gardening books. I have bought the components and mixed my own, but this is the same thing and ready made. You need 16 bags to fill a 4'x4' raised SFG but it is an expense you will not have for a long time in the future. All you add every succeding year is a spade full of compost from your compost pile in each section. Why fight poor soil, breaking your back digging and tilling. The SFG method is so much easier and better. Definitely worth the one time start up cost.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by CACKLE I just started square foot gardening and could not find vermiculite at a reasonable price. This is the perfect soil.
I just started square foot gardening and could not find vermiculite at a reasonable price. This is the perfect soil. The only problem is that it's pricey and I could not get it delivered to the Home Depot store. I ordered and had it delivered to my home for $55.00. Since I had 26 bags delivered it may have been worth it just to save my back. Although I don't know how the UPS guys felt about it. I do think that, when I do more beds next year, I will try regular gardening soil and see how it does compared to this soil.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Tropicalgal Didn't work for me. Midget plants!
I have done SF gardening since I read Mel's book about 4 years ago. Always mixed my own mix as recomended in his book and everything grew wonderfully. This year I made deeper boxes and saw this mix at Home Depot and bought it. Figured I would save myself the work mixing my own. Everything I planted came up but was stunted. Nothing grew more than a couple of inches high, kale, lettuces, swiss chard, arugala, green beans, peppers, tomatoes! I don't know what else it could be except the soil. Everything is the same except the soil. Will not use again. I am mixing my own again from now on.
