How much to buy?

I have one square foot gardening box, how many bags do I need?
Asked by: Diana
A 4 ft x 4 ft x 6 inch depth square foot garden is 8 cu. ft. 5 bags will get you 7.5 cu. ft. You are looking at approximately 100 dollars.

Since it is a product you carry can this product be ordered at a local store and sent to the local store to avoid the high shipping cost?

The cost per shipping is $10 per bag which is greater than the product.
Asked by: question1
I purchased 6 bags online and had them shipped free to the store. Next best thing to the store carrying it. Hope they continue this option. At times it has not available.

What exactly is in this mix? I want equal parts vermiculite, compost, and peat, just like Mel's book says.
Asked by: SandyD
It does contain the mix, but I do not know what percentage. My latest batch was ordered June 12, shipped to the east coast from Phoenix, AZ. All of my orders shipped from the same city and bag is the same, and I would guess that though store orders may have a different (local) mix, internet orders are the same. "Ingredients: Compost (in Georgia, 40-50% compost), Canadian Sphagnum peat moss, coir, vermiculite, bloodmeal, bone meal, kelp meal, cottonseed meal, alfalfa meal, and worm castings."

I am a long-time square foot gardener and this soil mix is the quickest, easiest way to getting started. My local Home Depot used to carry it in the store, but this year they decided not to. However, ordering it online and having it shipped to the store turned out to be the next best thing. I had heard on some SFG sites that HD was only shipping to the home and charging a high amount for shipping, but when I checked they had apparently decided to revisit the ship-to-store option. Hope they bring it back to the store, or at the very least continue to allow the free ship-to-store option. I got 6 bags!

Be aware that this is NOT the original Mel's Mix, as the reviewer of April 2017 mistakenly believed. It does not contain any peat moss or vermiculite. Now whether this cheaper, "economical" formulation works as well as the original Mel's Mix is arguable. I do not SFG but I can tell you this... don't use any kind of Mel's Mix for self-irrigating planters -- it will retain way too much water and go boggy.

Purchased this product last year through my HD local store and, was very pleased with the results. This year, unfortunately, I decided to go ahead and order a few weeks early and, product was not available in my local store so, went ahead and purchased through the HD website and had it shipped to my local store. Expecting the same quality product, I was somewhat disappointed with what I received. Scooped 3 nice sized scoops of product onto my gardening table, for potted plants and, was surprised to find a ton of debris in it. Pieces of wood, small pieces of branches and, even some small stones. Seemed like it was scooped up from some sort of wood floor, unfiltered, and dumped directly into a bag for shipping. Overall product quality was good unfortunately, this year, had to give this a 3 star review for no Quality Control. Ordered two of these so, hoping second bag will turn out better. Second bag will give me a better idea as to whether or not this was an isolated incident. Will have to consider/determine whether or not to continue to purchase this product in the future.

This is simply the best product hands down over all others, I dont know why home depot stopped stocking it at stores and i had to special order it. maybe miracle grow paid them more money to display their garbage. that is what miracle grow is Garbage. they put their fertilizer in with their soils. Its the worst, at first it can make plants look good but if you continue to use miracle grow , which is a salt based fertilizer it ends up killing plants because you have tooo much salts in the soil.

This is an awesome potting mix -- it combines 1/3 vermiculite, 1/3 peat moss and 1/3 of 5 different types of compost. It makes square foot gardening so much easier because you don't have to buy the ingredients separately and mix them yourself. It was delivered to my door and in just a short time I have radishes and beets growing beautifully. It's also great for transplants -- my lettuce and baby roma tomatoes love it! I don't think I'll use any other potting soil from now on.

Now you can't even buy it on line and have shipped to you. I went to reorder more of the soil and it is unavailable. And why is it so much more expensive than other garden soil. Does any other store carry it now?

Separate raised bed filled with Miracle Grow raised bed soil has bugs, soil has poor drainage, and plants are way behind.
