Customer Questions & Answers

will it slide in between stud and sheetrock?

I want to add an extra outlet on the existing house.. Can this be used? Will the bracket slide in between stud and sheetrock?
Asked by: Sebastian
Not very easily. Sometimes a drywall screw or nail will be found right behind the exact location desired for the new box. And the angle needed to start the bracket under the drywall will make it impossible to then fit the back of the box into the new hole in the wall. And boxes with brackets of almost all types are designed for NEW WORK, meaning before drywall is installed.

You now describe this as an old work box, but according to the product brochure (linked to above) this model B118B-UPC is a new work box. It's hard to imagine how you'd install that in an existing sheet-rock wall.

You are correct------this is a NEW WORK box. It is obviously not intended to be nailed to a stud that is behind an existing drywall. It is designed to be nailed to a stud on a wall (or ceiling) that has not yet been dry-walled. Roofing nails work nicely through the bracket into a wooden stud or, self-tapping screws can be used when installing on metal studs.

1-Gang 18 cu. in. PVC New Work Outlet Box with Bracket is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to install. Box is really easy to install. Back knockouts make it easy to adapt for wiring/cable positions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Electrical Box for 2 x 3 Lumber My house was built in the mid 1970s, and some of the wall framing lumber in the basement is 2x3 (not 2x4). I wanted to find a modern electrical box that fits within the smaller 2x3 lumber, yet still has enough room for wires. This box fits and has plenty of room for 1 or 2 circuits. Just make sure you install at least 1/2" thick drywall as the final wall covering...so the box doesn't stand proud of the final wall. And make sure to install an insulated staple to secure your wires within 12" of the box, because this is a new work box...so it has knock-outs...not the integrated clamps.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Bends too much Easy to install but after installation, it bent backward about 1/2" when I plugged in something. The plastic returned to its shape after I finshed pushing. I did install it flush against the stud, and secured it firmly with screws, but I will have to block around it or secure it some other way before putting up the drywall.
