Hi, I like to build outdoor furniture from PVC piping. (dog beds, towel racks, etc) I have had TONS of PVC cut in all different lengths at Home Depot . Just take in your measurements and they have the tools to do the job quickly and accurately.

I'm looking to build a canopy for my back deck. It would have a leg at all four corners, and 2 support legs down each side. Then I am going to put a removable canvas top on it, so it won't have a whole lot of extra weight. Would the 1 inch be sturdy enough or do I need to go bigger diameter?

Answer:
Hi SL, you can probably get away with 1" diameter. However I would see if you could get schedule 80 in the PVC. It's thicker walls makes it sturdier. The out side diameter is the same as schedule 40.

Answer:
No, a 10 foot section of 1 inch diameter schedule 40 pipe will actually sag visibly in the middle under it's own weight if it's just supported only at the ends. Sag at 7 lbs should be unacceptably obvious for 10 feet.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 3.2 out of 5 by 5 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by JM Eagle 1" Pipe is Absolutely Useless We cemented a piece of JM Eagle 1" PVC in a spring house, and then discovered that the pipe did not fit standard 1" PVC fittings. As speedracer found, it is SMALLER diameter than standard 1" pipe and could not be glued to fittings. Wasted half a day trying to find a way to attach it to fittings. A large local building supply store couldn't believe how this pipe was made. We ended up chiseling the pipe out of the wall. All this pipe is getting returned. Buyer beware! Check that it fits snugly into your fittings before you buy it. We will never buy JM Eagle pipe again. April 22, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Buyer Beware - J.M. Eagle 1" PVC Pipe Absolutely the worst quality control I have ever seen. I installed 100’ of this product only to find multiple points of leakage after careful pipe prep with purple solvent and the proper cement. After extensive research of the ASTM D1785 Specification, I discovered this pipe to be under size. It freely slips into all mating joints and actually wiggles around. This pipe should have an outside diameter of 1.315 +/- 0.005. I found the sections I purchased to be 1.290 to 1.300 in range. Avoid at all costs! July 31, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I agree with Doug also I also agree with Doug, I installed only 130' yesterday by myself without any leaks... And I'm a girl January 20, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I agree with Doug This product is super easy to install and I have had no problems with it. December 28, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Its 1 " Schedule 40 PVC Pipe It is 1" Schedule 40 PVC pipe. What can you say, it works. I have installed literally 1000's of feet of this pipe and never had a problem. The size is accurate and mates with all common fittings accurately. If you have problems, then the problem would be with the installer and not the pipe. April 4, 2014
