Is this a good product to use in a clay type of soil mixture and will it grow fairly quick, I have pear moss to. Add?

Asked by: Beverly
Plant cool-season grasses as seed during the fall or early spring. Varieties that grow in a clay-loam soil include annual ryegrass, colonial bent grass, hard fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass and red fescue. ( these are the kind of grass seed that is in the 5 lb. Sun and Shade Grass Patch Mix and yes you can add the pear moss. Spread organic compost on the surface of the area, making it about 6 inches deep for a clay-loam soil and 8 inches deep for a heavier clay soil. Work the compost into the soil with a tiller to break it apart and improve the organic matter dispersion. Let the soil rest for a minimum of two months. Test the soil a second time with the ball test to determine whether there is enough organic matter. Ideally, the soil should not form a long ribbon when pressed between your thumb and index finger. Spread and work in another layer of organic compost if the ribbon is longer than 1 inch. Allow another wait period before conducting the ball test again so that you give the compost time to change the composition of the soil. Measure the area being planted as lawn to calculate the amount of seed or number of plugs needed, using the manufacturer's recommendation for your chosen type of grass and the space. Divide the amount of seed into two applications if you are seeding the area. Spread half of the seed over the area using a broadcast spreader and walking in a vertical path. Spread the second half of the seed by walking in the perpendicular direction to get even coverage. Roll the seeded area with a lawn roller filled with water, and spread a thin layer of straw mulch over top. Plant grass plugs by digging holes about 6 inches apart along the lawn area. Sprinkle the soil with water to moisten the holes. Plant one plug into each hole so that the plugs are even with the ground level. Roll the planted area lightly with a lawn roller half full of water. Moisten the planted area with about 1/4 inch of water. Use a sprinkler to apply water one to two times a day to keep the soil evenly moist but not oversaturated until the grass is established. Set a small can in the area to measure the amount of water you are applying.

Can this be blended with bermuda

Want to seed bare spots around Bermuda grass
Asked by: Dana
Hi Dana. Yes, this grass seed patch can be blended with your Bermuda grass, although it is likely that the Bermuda will overtake this grass in time. The Heartland Seed Patch Repair will do best in a full sun to part shade environment. Be sure to keep well-watered during the 7-14 day germination period. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. Rick_HD_OC

Asked by: Peter
Hello. Yes. Once the grass seed has been watered in thoroughly and then has completely dried, it is safe for animals and children to re-enter the area.

10 lb. Sun and Shade Grass Patch Mix is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 3.

The instructions were straight forward and sever or eight days later my bare patch was full of grass. I watered twice a day like I was supposed to and my results have been fantastic. I have only seen the fescue so far because the ryegrass and bluegrass take longer to come in but I have no doubt my results will be equally satisfactory to what they are now. I was going to go with Scott's but a lot of reviews talked about how the quality has been dropping off with them. So, this was more affordable and provided superb results. I will be buying more for when I do my over-seed. I didn't see it anywhere in the description but this is a Pennington product for those that care to know. Also, I highly recommend buying some 1/2" pvc and some green plastic fencing if you are doing small bare patches. Cut the pvc into stakes and weave it through the plastic fencing. Helps keep people and animals from walking on your patch. I will try to get pictures up of my results.

Was amazed that grass started to show in less than three days. Quite strong within ten days. I did cover with an inch of top dressing and fine plastic netting to stop birds etc.
