I'm going to rephrase mike's question. . . Can this 1" thick tread be attached directly to the cut carriage stringers, or should I attach a piece of 3/4" plywood as a subtread first, and then the 1" thick oak tread on top of the ply.
Asked by: MikeC
Hi Mike, there's no need for a sub-tread or anything other substrate other than the cut stringer/carriage. If your concern is strength of the staircase, be sure to build the staircase from the bottom up. Risers go in first, then treads. A good best-practice is to insert wood screws through the back of the riser into the back edge of the tread, provided you can access the back of the staircase. Using wood glue and/or construction adhesive on non-visible joints will also add stability and strength, reducing the chances for squeaks later on. If you have other questions, we'll be happy to help you. Thanks!

Can I get a wider width i.e 54"

Asked by: Jeff
Hi Woodman, these treads are available in 60 and 72 inch widths. The 60 in. width has internet #205458915, and can be cut down to a specific width to fit your staircase. Search on that internet number on HomeDepot.com, and you should find it. Your store likely does not carry it, so it can be special ordered at any Home Depot store, or ordered online and delivered directly to your home. If you have any other questions, we'll be glad to help any way we can. Thank you!

Will HomeDepot install these Stair Treads for me?

Asked by: Matt
Hi Matt, check with your local Home Depot ProDesk to ask if they provide that service. They may be able to refer you to a staircase installation professional. Thank you!

Can these be installed directly to the stringer without using a substair?

Asked by: mike
Mike, We suggest using stringers that support the treads and risers from underneath. This makes for a more secure installation in renovations where building/remodeling a stair onsite is required. Attaching treads and risers to the stringer, without using support underneath, is a complex task to be completed by a staircase manufacturer, or a staircase professional using routers, glue wedges and proper tooling. There are instructions on how to install treads and risers on the Home Depot.com website. If you have additional questions, we'll be happy to assist you.

11-1/2 x 48 in. Red Oak Stair Tread is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product but Specs are not correct This stair tread does have a Red Oak surface BUT has finger-jointed Hemlock as the underlying wood. Also the actual thickness is 1-1/16", NOT 1". The Home Depot description is mistaken and hopefully will be corrected as a result of this review. The product is an excellent choice but do not expect a solid oak tread as is stated in the description.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Red Oak Stair Tread with Bull Nose Home depot carries multiple stair tread types. This particular model contains the bull-nose (where the lip of the tread will overhang the stair casing itself) which is rounded nicely. We utilized this tread for a total of 35 stairs in my home (basement and 1/2 story). The tread stained very well and has held up to abuse from pets and small children for almost 2 years. I have had no problems with warping or cracking that is sometimes found in wood that is not dry enough before it is installed.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from inspection & Qulity control of pieces highly lacking I got these stair threads for a job in the mountains. No stores for 45 miles. Two of the threads were made out of defective wood.I was lucky to have a planer.and tools to remake the threads 1 1/2 hours of rework and being very MAD At HOME DEPOT. Very poor Quality control. No one is inspecting both side of thread for JUNK material
