Answer:
As long as they are packed down level otherwise paver could break. I would prefer, and have used, "Pea Gravel", which are very small pebbles, or use sand. Sand is easier to level off.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 80 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great value for the price Thanks to this specific paving stone, my patio was able to be completed at a much lesser price! April 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Outstanding Quality "Well, yes dear" was the initial response when my wife requested that a grass walkway be made "more stable". The drought made this decision a bit easier and I purchased 25 of these red step stones and 6 bags of concrete. The results were outstanding and encouraged me to "expand" the walkway. "Well" 324 step stones later, along with 126 bricks, and unknown bags of concrete, the walkway is now completed. What happened? All I can clearly say is that the color of these step stones is consistent with no variations. They are very easy to work with and look really impressive when completed. They truly add a great safety benefit to your walkways, value to you home, and look truly beautiful when completed. Great product indeed. October 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by GOOD PRICE, GOOD QUALITY These are very good quality concrete blocks. They have many uses. I use them as a base for a floor support. May 3, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Red Pavers Use these for pathways and patio in the garden. The quality is not as good as it used to be and they break more easily than in previous years and the surface is more porous and crumbly . Was very glad for the sale price on this item and will buy them again when there is another sale. I use cement stain on these for a color I like and it seems to prolong their life and they crumble and break less with the stain. Staining them makes them a pretty expensive install but they seem to hold up better with it and looks very nice. May 12, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Couldn't be happier My neighbor installed these pavers for me and did an excellent, professional job. I used to have only dirt and weeds under my avocado tree, now it looks like my yard belongs in a magazine. I couldn't be happier. June 10, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by On a budget patio Great product for the price...got mine on sale for .99 a piece. Easy to work with, the only downfall is there not exactly the same dimensions. My patio is still in work but I've posted few photos. April 26, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect stepping stones I used these in our side/back yard. I made a pathway, then buried them in the dirt. I leveled the ground below and when I placed the stones on top, they fit just right. Well, maybe with a minor adjustment here and there. A very inexpensive way to not only make the yard look better, but also a path to keep our feet clean after a good rain. February 2, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Concrete Step Stone Patio I installed a 16' by16' extension to my existing concrete slab patio in my backyard, using these step stones. As expected from reviews I read before purchasing, the measurements were not exactly 12" x 12", so the edging I purchased had to be cut to fit and installed after I laid the stones down. This wasn't really too much of a problem, just that it worked out differently from what is shown in the "how to" video that accompanies the online description of these stones. I managed to level and screed the sand by myself. Putting down the sand and screeding, took me a day to do by myself (I'm not the power-house I once was now that I'm in my fifties), and laying the stone with help to move it close to the worksite took an eight-hour day. I fussed over some of the stones that didn't look completely level (another four hours or so) but I got this project done in just under three days. It would take a couple of stronger, younger people probably a day. All in all, I am very happy with the result, and with the overall price tag: a very nice outdoor space for about $700.00, including sand, edging and stone. September 29, 2014
