I bought the TruAire 12 x 12 return register. My lovely HVAC company installed a stupid 12 x 12 grill and no filter on it. So I gonna fix it myself. Home Depot had this register box and the return register. I could not get the return register to fit the box. It is exactly 12 x 12. But I knew it had to fit. So I opened the flange on all four sides and that return register slipped right in and is snug as a bug. Great products and they work well together.

This ceiling box is not designed to accept a filter directly. It needs to be installed with a filter grill. I do agree it is cheaply made

Kudos to home depot for having this product and its noise dampening capabilities. However, it needs to be improved.
12x12 register should accept a grill that will hold a 12x12 filter. Right? The opening is exactly 12x12 so a grill for a 12x12 filter will not fit since it will be bigger. A real pain making the opening bigger. With duct board you need to completely seal the box with tape so there are no air leaks through the fiberglass. The way this box was made did not accomodate easy sealing with tape, etc. The felt lining was to thin particularly at the back of the register where the collar goes through. Maybe there is a collar that will work with the product, but mine resulted in tufts of insulation sticking out between the tabs bent back to hold the collar in. This was remedied with aluminum tape and easily inspected for tape failure when one changes filters in the grill.
I had a competive product in a 12x24 register. It was the right size for the grill, easy to tape, and had a thick felt lining where the collar went through (A+ product). This product was $10 cheaper than the competitive 12x12 register, but the amount of time compensating for its deficiencies makes it worthless.
