Customer Questions & Answers

What do you use to trim the tape to 3/4" wide ply, since the tape is 13/16"?

Asked by: Blair
Use a utility knife with a new blade. Place the installed edge=banded side down and follow along the piece of plywood/other. Take your time. When you are done cutting, you can sand the edge lightly on a 45 degree angle stroking the sandpaper inward toward the center of the edge band. Use something like 150 grit. It makes sense to practice your technique with about 6 inches of edge band on a scrap piece of wood.

Round corner of the cabinet will it conform and stick to it.

If i make the corner of the cabinet round will it conform and stick to it or will it crack or lift off while applying it.
Asked by: RR
I think engr4you may have misunderstood the question, or maybe I'm misunderstanding. I think "round corner" is referring to a rounded corner (e.g. on a rectangular tabletop) not the rounded edge of the plywood or particle board. I'm building a small table for an RV and plan to round the corners so that it doesn't hurt if someone bumps into the corner. I suspect that the edge tape will bend nicely around a corner with a 4" radius, but haven't tried it yet. I agree with engr4you that it's unlikely to stick to anything other than a flat edge.

Can this be stained?

Asked by: Cheryl
Yes, it is meant to take stain just like solid oak boards so that your plywood or particleboard looks like solid wood. You should lightly sand the edge banding face as well as sanding its edges on a 45 degree angle moving toward center. Wipe clean with cloth and then apply your stain. Typically, you want to sand with 180 or 220 or both in that order. Again--sand lightly. It typically just take a few passes. BTW, there are edge banding tips a couple of places on line.

I have purchased edge banding at Home Depot and another source and this product is every bit as good as from the other source at a lower price point. It irons on easily using a high heat setting on a home iron. If you are a DIY-er and have not done this before you might want to take a short piece and practice on a small piece of 3/4 inch wood or plywood. There are tips for doing this jobs a couple of places on line. There are actual trimming tools if you have a lot to do or you can use a utility knife or razor knife to trim edges. a one inch SHARP chisel and mallet can be used to trim the ends flush. It takes stain quite well after a few sanding strokes of the face and edges with 180 grit sandpaper. It is easier to apply and trim to panels as you build them but it can be trim on cabinet edges while the cabinet is in place with the doors removed. Use a length of wood behind the edge to be trimmed and move it with your utility knife being VERY CAREFUL and using a sharp blade. Take your time and you should be very pleased with the end result.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as advertised I used this on the edges of a plywood bookcase that I built. It adheres well, takes stain like regular wood, and is easy to use. However, because of curves in the grain it created an optical illusion. I finished applying it and stepped back to admire my work and the bookcase looked warped, with twisted or sagging shelves. I measured and everything was perfectly square, but looked weird. I thought perhaps I was getting goofy from the stain fumes or something. Then I turned the case around and looked at it from the side that didn't have this edge tape. It looked perfectly square. I hope that once it is loaded with books it will lose the twisty appearance. So my advice would be to be mindful of the grain direction before applying. Otherwise this stuff is pretty great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Carpenter when applied right, edge banding gives the plywood ends a nice, solid look to add beauty to your cabinet or shelving project. I use this product all the time and would recommend using it on all your cabinet, shelving jobs.
