Questions & Answers

When shingles are to be installed on this strand board, should the reflective side be towards the sky or away from it?

In other words; This board would be used as the roof board with the paper and shingles attached to the reflective side or non reflective side?
Asked by: Do1Right
The silver (Radiant side) should be visible from the inside of the attic. If this is being installed where there used to be skip sheeting for a wood roof, the skip sheeting should be removed so the radiant barrier is not being touched. It only works when there is nothing touching the silver (Radiant) side of it.

can I use this for wall sheething? wich side goes out. it will be stuccoed over.

Asked by: mark
Yes, this can be used for wall sheeting. The silver side faces toward the side you want to retain or repel heat.

Are the vapor vents on both sides? I was looking at this as potentially being a panacea for the structural and insulation needs of an RV/van. However, the vapor vents are obviously a concern. Venting moisture from the space between the van wall back out into the van interior would obviously be useful. But having moisture travel from the van interior into the wall space (against the metal) is obviously going to be problematic. It also seems awesome for the floor, but again, the vapor vents are a concern. Curious to know if anyone with experience of the product can weigh in here. Thanks.

note: I realised, after posting this, that it's kind of a dumb, or poorly articulated question. What I really want to know is, is it bi-directionally breathable, or not? In other words, will it vent moisture in one direction, or both?

What is OSB and CDX?
Asked by: Dee
OSB is short for oriented strand board. CDX is an average graded sheet of exterior plywood.

15/32 in. x 48 in. x 8 ft. OSB TechShield Radiant Barrier is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from amazing results When I started to do a reroof with a small temp patch I needed to replace the 3 ply sheathing on the roof. I figured I would give this stuff a try. I live in a hot summer climate and my attic gets very hot in the summer. I went up there to do something on a warm day and discovered that I could hold my hand on the foil of the OSB, but could barely get close to the original 3ply next to it without burning my hand. It rely does work well. Foil out for walls and foil down for roofs. My whole house is much cooler in the summer thanks to this stuff. It is well worth the extra cost. You will save enough on power the first year to pay for it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Stuff! This OSB with the radiant barrier really does shield from heat from direct sun. We used it for the first time on a detached garage and it made a noticible difference in how hot the garage got on hot days. Plus, we used leftovers for shelving. Normally OSB doesn't make good shelves because unlike plywood the rough surface prevents you from easily sliding boxes on them. This stuff used as shelves has built in shelf paper! And the reflective layer is REALLY stuck on there. It won't peel off and it wipes clean.
