Customer Questions & Answers

Should I change 20 amp breakers to 15 amp breakers?

I just bought a 40 year old house. I am replacing all 15 amp duplex receptacles in the house because they are all old. The circuit breakers to those receptacles are 20 amp breakers and the wires are 12 gauge. 1. Should I change the breakers from 20 amp breakers to 15 amp breakers? 2. If yes, can I leave the 12 gauge wires alone instead if changing them to 14 gauge?
Asked by: DougTheMan
If you already have 20 Amp breakers and 12 Ga wiring, use new 20 Amp receptacles, the 15 Amp receptacles should NOT to be used on a 20 Amp circuit. Why would you want to change / downsize the breakers?

Hello PE, This is the recommended wire size for the CHF115 circuit breaker: #14-8 or #14-10 AWG Cu/Al. Regards, Eaton
