I just bought a 40 year old house. I am replacing all 15 amp duplex receptacles in the house because they are all old. The circuit breakers to those receptacles are 20 amp breakers and the wires are 12 gauge.

1. Should I change the breakers from 20 amp breakers to 15 amp breakers?

2. If yes, can I leave the 12 gauge wires alone instead if changing them to 14 gauge?

Answer:
If you are changing from 20 amp receptacles to 15 amp receptacles, you need to change the breakers to 15 amp also. The wire doesn't need to be changed-12 gauge is rated to carry 20 amps, reducing this to 15 amps will cause no problem.
