Product Overview

This is a rugged, industrial grade disposable pleated air filter. It features a synthetic fiber filtering medium that is laminated to an expanded metal backing. This combination is then folded into an accordion pleat arrangement to increase filtering surface. This greater filtering surface allows more effective filtration while keeping airflow resistance low. The media pack is encased and sealed within a die-cut, moisture resistant frame. The range goes from 6-10. Which is it for this box of 6 (judging from the price I'd expect it to be on the low end of the range)?

Home Depot is using a "Filter Performance Rating" system ranging from a FPR of 4 to FPR 10. You can view this by going to Buying Guides >Heating and Cooling > Air Filters. Home Depot is using a "Filter Performance Rating" system ranging from a FPR of 4 to FPR 10. You can view this by going to Buying Guides >Heating and Cooling > Air Filters. I did click on a Honeywell filter 2- pack and under the specifications tab, details: Filter Performance Rating FPR = not rated. This probably means no one has payed the test lab to give this filter a rating yet. If you look at the picture of this filter pack, you can see a circle and inside it is FPR 8. The size on the package picture is for this filter so they are not using a universal picture for their Honeywell filters. Which do you trust, the picture or the specifications? What is a consumer to do? Look a couple of lines lower in the details and we have a MERV Rating (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value).
Minimum efficiency reporting value, commonly known as MERV rating, is a measurement scale designed in 1987 by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) to rate the effectiveness of air filters. You can find a chart of MERV rating at: http://www.mechreps.com/PDF/Merv_Rating_Chart.pdf. I don't know why we needed another filter rating system, but our ANSI/ASHRAE uses the MERV ratings to set minimums for residential applications. I have only seen the FPR chart on Home Depot's site and wonder if the 20 steps of the MERV rating was too confusing for consumers or is it some "Ad Mans" hype so the consumer is comparing Apples to Oranges and will buy his product.
With both rating systems, higher numbers trap smaller partials. Smaller partials trapped requires shorter filter change intervals and the blower system must work harder and often delivers less air flow. How often do you want to change your filter? How soon do you want to repair your blower system? How clean do you NEED your air to be?
I know this did not tell you your rating as I can't tell which filter you are looking at from your question and the picture description provided with the question takes me nowhere. Maybe you can find a MERV rating, find a 1 pack of the same filter, find a picture or decide there is not that much difference in the filters in this range and don't want to work your blower any harder than you have to. The rating is surprisingly quite high. I would say it is an 8 for efficiency.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good filter Good filter. Seems to catch any dust and keep the heated and cooled air clean. Contractor introduced me to the filter when they replaced our furnace and AC. July 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Home furnace filter/Flanders brand Very competitive pricing. I did have trouble locating product as it was not cross referenced on mfg site as available from Home Depot. By chance I searched ur website and found the part number was there. May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Got them! They make filters that capture more fine allergens but they are more restrictive. Many sites don't even have these MERV 8 filters. These filters can stop anything I wanted to stop yet don't restrict (load down the blower) as a higher rated filter would. Check out MERV ratings on the web. This is what my Heating/ Cooling specialist installed with my new system to balance clean air with maximum system life (no one in my household has special air needs). Actual size of the filter is less than the nominal (name) size and was the same as the original filter that came with my system. The size, availability (none in the box stores -" use 4 1"X16"x 25" because we have them in stock, instead"), and price lead me to the purchase. The quality was just as good as my original, and what I wanted, even if there are better (higher MERV rated) more expensive filters available. December 29, 2015
